General Requirements

Biola University requires the following lines and minimum limits of insurance coverage. Please note that Biola will only require applicable coverage types based on the work being done. Contact Risk Management if your third party contractor or vendor does not meet the general requirements below.

Workers Compensation (WC) Statutory Per California State Law Generally when any third party is coming to campus.
Business Auto Liability (BA) $1M When a third party uses their vehicle for anything more than transportation to campus.
BA For Transportation Companies $5M When using transportation companies such as a charter bus company.
Professional Liability / Errors & Omissions (PLEO) $1M When using a third party who provides specialized professional services.
Sexual Abuse & Molestation Coverage $1M When a third party using Biola's property where minors are involved.
Protection & Indemnity $1M When chartering watercraft transportation.
Excess Liability $5M Required when underlying limits do not meet Biola's requirements.
Environmental Liability $1M Required when a third party is handling materials or chemicals that may be harmful to the environment.

Additional Insured Endorsement (AIE)

Commercial General Liability policies must include an additional insured endorsement naming Biola University, Inc. (13800 Biola Avenue, La Mirada, CA 90639), its officers, directors, trustees, governing boards, employees, volunteers, agents and representatives as Additional Insured on a primary and non-contributory basis. This endorsement is a separate document from a certificate of insurance.

Other Requirements

Third parties must provide coverage on policies which meet the following requirements:

  • Issued on an occurrence basis unless otherwise agreed upon by Biola University and maintain insurance with a company or companies satisfactory to Biola University
  • Lawfully authorized to do business in the State of California
  • Hold an A.M. Best rating of A- VIII (8) or better.

The Commercial General Liability and Business Auto policies must meet the following requirements:

  • Issued on ISO Form CG2010 (11/85 edition date) or equivalent
  • Apply to both ongoing and completed operations.

The Commercial General Liability certificate must meet the following requirements:

  • Provide a 30 day notice of cancellation
  • Cancellation for nonpayment should provide a 10 day notice of cancellation
  • Have no exclusion or limitation in the XCU hazard coverage (Explosion, Collapse, and Underground)
  • Show coverage for products and completed operations
  • Provide a waiver of subrogation in favor of Biola University, Inc., its officers, directors, trustees, governing boards, employees, volunteers and agents

Third parties may use Excess Liability or Umbrella policies to combine with their underlying policies to meet the required limits.

Workers Compensation policies must include Coverage “B”/Part II/Employer Liability with a $1,000,000 limit.

Auto policies must cover symbol 1 (“any auto”), including, but not limited to, Hired Autos, Owned Autos, Leased Autos and Non-Owned Autos.

Biola requires Sexual Abuse & Molestation Coverage if minors (anyone under 18 years old) stay overnight on Biola’s campus.

Miscellaneous Stipulations

Biola University is not responsible for any loss, damage or theft of equipment, tools or materials or other property of contractor/vendor or contractor’s/vendor’s employees, agents or representatives when left on a Biola University project. Such property must be covered on the contractor’s/vendor’s own property insurance and contractor/vendor agrees to waive right of subrogation against Biola University.

Insurance certificates and additional endorsement pages must be emailed in PDF format to insurance.certificates@biola.edu. Acceptable insurance certificates must be received before any contract work begins.

Certificate Requests

Biola’s constituents may have need to use a third party’s location (e.g., conference at a hotel or a location for a student film project) or their property (e.g., rental equipment). Others may require an insurance certificate from Biola because of contractual requirements (e.g., professional liability to set up an internship at a hospital). Those desiring to request an insurance certificate for sanctioned purposes may request that one be produced by filling out the Certificate Request Form. The turnaround time for these requests is generally 3–5 business days.
