Message from the President

Welcome to Biola University’s Spring Commencement, and congratulations for finishing well, graduates. Today is a culmination of years of hard work and perseverance, which no doubt included valleys and mountaintops. Today is also a commencement of something new. The world needs what you have to give, equipped in mind and character to make a difference for the cause of the gospel. May the relationships that have been formed, the wisdom you have gained and the knowledge that has been imparted stand you in good stead in the years ahead. Each one of you has been a special gift of God to Biola University, and our prayers go with you as you take this important step in your journey.

Barry H. Corey, Ph.D.

President

Message from the Provost & Senior Vice President

On behalf of the faculty, today I have the honor of presenting the graduating class to President Corey for the awarding of their degrees during our commencement exercises. The entire Biola University community rejoices with you today and prayerfully commissions you for service to Christ. Whatever your vocation, our prayer is that God would sovereignly use all that He has done in your life during your years at Biola to advance his redemptive work in the world and to continue to transform you more into the image of Jesus. All of us — faculty, staff, administration, and friends — are proud of you and rejoice with you on this special day. May God bless you and may you shine boldly in the world for Jesus Christ.

Matthew, J. Hall, Ph.D.

Friday Commencement Speaker

Steve Green has served as the president of Hobby Lobby since 2004 and has helped his family grow the business to more than 1,000 stores in 48 states with approximately 50,000 employees. He is a national speaker on both business and philanthropy, always focusing on how his faith intersects with his life's endeavors.

Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary recognized his impact in these overlapping life arenas with an Honorary Doctor of Divinity Degree in 2013, and in 2015, Mid-America Christian University presented him with an Honorary Doctor of Biblical Literature degree.

Mr. Green is also chairman of the board for the Museum of the Bible. In his role as chairman, Mr. Green has assembled a team of academics, designers, technology professionals and other experts to create the 430,000-square-foot Museum of the Bible, dedicated to a scholarly and engaging presentation of the Bible's impact, history and narrative. The museum opened in November 2017 in Washington, D.C., three blocks from the U.S. Capitol.

Mr. Green has authored four books: Faith in America (2011); The Bible in America (2013); This Dangerous Book (2017) and This Beautiful Book (2019). His books can be found in Hobby Lobby stores across the nation and online.

Mr. Green and his wife, Jackie, have been married for more than 30 years and reside in Oklahoma City, where Hobby Lobby is headquartered. Their family includes a son, five daughters, a daughter-in-law, three sons-in-law and six grandchildren. They are actively involved in their local church, as well as with many national and international Christian ministries and charities.

Academic Dress

View Academic Dress

Contemporary academic dress is clearly derived from the robes worn by teachers in European medieval universities and is based upon clerical garb, since the clergy were the first university teachers. Today, academic dress does not serve its original functions of providing warmth and/or distinguishing one’s religious order, but it does serve to identify the degree held, field of study and the university from which the wearers received their advanced degrees.

The American university robe comes in different shapes to identify its wearer as holder of the Bachelor, Master or Doctor degree (three velvet stripes on each sleeve further identify the doctoral robe) and is usually a closed gown in black. The foreign university robe is often open in the front and is frequently found in the Doctor version in a color other than black, such as red.

It is possible for the skilled observer to decipher the degree held from the robe and also to discern the subject area and the university of its wearer according to the mix of colors on the hood. The velvet band around the neck of the hood is frequently colored according to the scheme below to indicate academic area, and the lining of the hood appears with the official colors of the degree-granting institution.

Caps and tassels also vary. Most American and many foreign universities employ the black mortarboard, while some American and foreign universities are further identified with unusual shapes and types of caps. The tassels are usually black, although some universities vary there also, employing silver and gold.

Historical Sketch

View Historical Sketch

Biola University traces its origins to the Bible Institute of Los Angeles established in 1908 by Lyman Stewart, founder and president of the Union Oil Company, and the Rev. T.C. Horton, two men of extraordinary vision and commitment to Christian higher education.

Dedicated to sharing and defending the Christian faith, Stewart and Horton established the Institute to educate and equip men and women to impact society at home and abroad with the truth of the gospel. The Institute’s influence was felt along the entire Western Seaboard from Mexico to Canada and across the Pacific to China. By 1909, over 540 extension courses were sponsored by the Bible Institute.

The following decades produced immense growth, development and outreach. The school moved from a two-year to a four-year program offering degrees in theology, Christian education and sacred music, and a one-year program in missionary medicine. By 1949, the Bible Institute expanded to include Bible college and in 1952 launched Talbot Theological Seminary to further serve the Christian community. In 1959, Biola received accreditation from the Western Association of Schools and Colleges.

In the ensuing years, Biola College broadened its curricula in the arts, sciences, professions and seminary offerings while maintaining its strong foundation in biblical studies. Throughout the 1960s and 1970s the program base further expanded, and in 1977 the Rosemead Graduate School of Professional Psychology was acquired. Biola College became Biola University on July 1, 1981, composed of the School of Arts and Sciences, Rosemead School of Psychology and Talbot School of Theology.

Today, Biola University offers more than 250 biblically integrated academic programs at the bachelor's, master's and doctoral degree levels. Enrollment continues to surpass 5,000 students on campus, online and in distance programs around the world, spread across eight schools: Rosemead School of Psychology, Talbot School of Theology, Crowell School of Business, Snyder School of Cinema and Media Arts, the School of Education, the School of Fine Arts and Communication, the School of Humanities and Social Science, and the School of Science, Technology and Health.

Year after year, Biola University is consistently recognized as one of the world's strongest Christian universities — widely known for leading academic programs in business, film, science and more. As students pursue a top-tier education and are stretched intellectually, they also grow closer to God and develop a resilient faith through the most robust curriculum of required biblical studies and theology courses of any university. Meanwhile, Biola remains one of the few universities where every student, professor and staff member is a professing Christian.

Since 1908, Biola has stood as a beacon of hope for the intellectual, spiritual and moral growth of its students. From the start, Lyman Stewart envisioned that Biola would "radiate streams of influence...to the darkest places of the earth." As today's graduates leave Biola transformed and ready to make an impact in their communities, they join the rich heritage of tens of thousands who have gone before them.
