Admission Overview


Admission to Biola University's CMA program is highly competitive. We want creative students who are willing to have their faith stretched and their talents expanded. Examine what you offer Biola and the entertainment industry. Carefully consider your passions and gifts. Plan a visit to campus. Schedule a tour of our studio. Clarify your calling to cinema and media arts. Currently less than half of the students who apply are accepted into the program. Apply early. Apply well. Complete application information is available on the Biola University admissions website. The application deadline for the CMA program at Biola is February 1.

This application is subsequent to and separate from your application to Biola University. The CMA program will not process an application until the applicant has been accepted by Biola University. Be sure you apply to Biola before or at the same time you apply to the CMA major of the mass communication department.

Overview of Application Procedure:

  1. Submit your application to Biola University.
  2. Review the CMA application process and submit your CMA application at the same time you submit your application to Biola OR after you submit your university application -- the CMA application is due February 1.
  3. Receive notification of admission to Biola University.
  4. Application reviewed by the CMA department.
  5. Receive notification of admission to the CMA major.
  6. Formally accept offer.

Application Instructions


Thank you for your interest in the Cinema and Media Arts department at Biola University. The department offers outstanding programs in the areas of film, television, and audio. Due to the high demand for entrance into the Cinema and Media Arts department and the need to coordinate facilities with the number of majors, we regrettably must limit the number of students accepted into this area of study. It is anticipated that less than one-half of the applicants will be admitted for the following academic year.

Your admission to Cinema and Media Arts is separate from and contingent upon your admission to Biola University. Admission to Biola University does not guarantee admission into the Cinema and Media Arts department. Acceptance to the Cinema and Media Arts department will not be considered until after the applicant has been admitted to Biola University.

Please be assured that media production experience is NOT a prerequisite for admission into the Cinema and Media Arts major. Our program will show you how to use the tools. We are more interested in leadership ability, creative thinking, problem-solving, dreaming and incredible character. Please note that many of our students also participate in the Torrey Honors Program.

Steps to Apply & Requirements:

  1. First, complete your application to Biola University.
  2. After you have completed your university application, submit your completed online cinema and media arts application by February 1st.
  3. Remember to include links to your work samples. Quantity is not necessarily correlated with quality. We prefer one good example.
  4. Make sure to attach PDF's of your letters of recommendation.

Timeline


February -- Application Deadline

The Cinema and Media Arts Application Deadline is February 1st.

March -- Notification of Acceptance

The full department faculty will prayerfully review your application. Notification of your acceptance in to the Cinema and Media Arts Department will be mailed the first week of March. At that time, you will be notified of your acceptance, placement on a waiting list or denial of admission. If you agree to be placed on a waiting list you will receive final notification of your status soon after the first of May.

May -- Acceptance of Admission Offer

If you are admitted into the Cinema and Media Arts major, you must confirm your acceptance of this offer by the May 1st and meet all enrollment and deposit requirements of Biola University by this date. Failure to do so will forfeit your admission into the Cinema and Media Arts major. Failure to confirm acceptance and finish Biola admission requirements by May 1st will forfeit your admission to the Cinema and Media Arts department.

Is the application to Biola University the same as the application to the CMA Major?

No, the CMA application is separate from and IN ADDITION TO your application to Biola University.

If I am accepted to Biola, does that automatically guarantee my acceptance into the Cinema and Media Arts major?

No - Admission to CMA is separate from and contingent upon your admission to Biola University. Admission to Biola University does not guarantee admission into the CMA major.

When will my application be considered for acceptance into the Cinema and Media Arts major?

The CMA program will not process an application until the applicant has first been accepted to Biola University. After that, the full department participates in prayerfully reviewing your application for acceptance.

Should I submit my application to the CMA major at the same time as my application to Biola?

Yes. We suggest you submit your application to the CMA major at the same time you submit your application to Biola. You may also submit your CMA application anytime prior to the CMA February 1st application deadline.

What are you looking for in a prospective student? Do I need to have extensive media experience to get in?

Please be assured that media production experience is not a prerequisite for admission into the CMA major. Our program will show you how to use the tools. We are more interested in leadership ability, creative thinking, problem solving, and integrity.

Should I include samples of my work?

Yes, if you have them. Any examples of your work or accomplishments that you would like us to review would be helpful. Quantity is not correlated with quality. We prefer one good example.

What equipment should I own?

CMA Students are encouraged to purchase a computer with video editing software. While we understand the financial strains of such equipment expenditures, we also recognize that this technologically driven major involves costs well beyond the textbooks that serve as the essential tools for many other undergraduate departments. Contact the department for specific equipment recommendations.
