B.A. in Politics, Philosophy, and Economics

Overview

Biola University's B.A. in Politics, Philosophy, and Economics (PPE) is an interdisciplinary degree that blends theory and practice, and equips students to examine the ideas, institutions and forces that shape our world. Through the joint study of political science, philosophy and economics, students develop the critical thinking and leadership skills needed to engage complex questions and contribute thoughtfully as Christians in their communities and professions.

What sets Biola's PPE program apart is its integration of faith, scholarship and mentorship. Through discussion-centered seminars, engaging events and support from faculty, students connect classroom learning with real-world questions while preparing for careers in law, public policy, business, nonprofit leadership, government or graduate study.

Students in the PPE program have opportunities to:

  • Explore areas of interest. Shape your academic experience around the questions and ideas that matter most to you through PPE courses, core curriculum, Bible courses and individualized learning opportunities.
  • Make connections across fields. Bring together perspectives from politics, philosophy, economics and other disciplines through interdisciplinary research, directed readings and project-based courses.
  • Engage in community. Strengthen your reading, writing and discussion skills through exploration of enduring questions alongside Christian scholars and fellow students.
  • Grow as a thoughtful Christian leader. Develop intellectually, spiritually and professionally as you consider how your faith, knowledge and gifts can be used in service to others.

Courses

What will I study as a PPE major?

The Biola PPE program takes a “deep and wide” approach to your learning and professional career preparation. As a Biola PPE major, your coursework and intellectual experiences will take you broadly across three interrelated disciplines. You’ll take courses in political science, philosophy, and economics, as well as integrated PPE courses including a final capstone.

You'll also have opportunities to think deeply about specific ideas of interest to you and orient your academic plan around them. This exploration can take place not only within the PPE major, but also through your core curriculum and Bible courses. You may even have the opportunity to design unique directed readings or project-based courses that draw perspectives from other areas of expertise, such as film history. Most importantly, your growth and maturing as a Christian undergirds the entire program experience.

Course highlights include:

Politics, Philosophy, and Economics Preparatory Seminar (PPEC 2100)

This course introduces students to interdisciplinary approaches to the study of politics, philosophy, and economics and prepares them to successfully integrate their Christian faith with complex ideas across time, topic, and geographic origin. Students will propose a research and service agenda to assist them in their academic and professional planning. Grade Mode: A.

Introduction to Economic Theory (PPEC 3570)

An exploration of the history of economic thought and theory with a special focus on the work of Smith, Ricardo, Marx, Hayek, Keynes, and Friedman. This discussion-based seminar also includes key developments in economic theory and Christian economic thought from the late twentieth century to the present. Grade Mode: A.

Capstone in Statecraft and the Christian (PPEC 4500)

Senior capstone seminar in interdisciplinary thought across politics, philosophy, and economics. The course culminates in a final project selected by the students in alignment with their spiritual, research, and professional goals and final assessment of their mastery of the Politics, Philosophy, and Economics program objectives. Grade Mode: A.

Because of Dr. Van Hook’s mentorship both in and outside of Torrey Honors, I was able to grow in confidence as a student, Christian, and someone who is seeking to work in public service.

FAQs

What's the difference between the B.A. in Political Science and B.A. in Philosophy programs with the B.A. in Politics, Philosophy, and Economics (PPE) at Biola?

There are a few distinctive differences between these three B.A. degree programs. While you will take political science and philosophy courses alongside students from those majors, the integrated PPE courses such as the PrepSem and Capstone will be exclusively available to PPE majors. The PPE degree also includes a set of required economics courses that are not required by the other two majors. We highly recommend that students interested in any of these three majors talk with department faculty members and decide which are best for you.

Can I double major in PPE?

Yes! Students who are interested in double majoring can work with their academic advisor and the director on a plan. Political science, philosophy or business are excellent options, and many students may want to branch out further into other areas such as history or Bible or even the sciences. For example, PPE graduates interested in medical school or governmental relations jobs with tech companies might consider pairing this with a major from the School of Science, Technology and Health.

Can I earn a minor in PPE?

No. As the PPE program is highly integrated and requires a broad coursework set, it is not available as a minor. You can, however, add one or more minors to your PPE major. Minors in pre-law, political science, philosophy, history, public administration, international relations and business are great options to consider.

Do I need to be a part of the Torrey Honors College program to be a PPE major?

No. The PPE major is open to both Torrey Honors College students and students in the regular Biola core curriculum. Because Torrey Honors pairs so well with the PPE major, however, students interested in PPE are highly encouraged to reach out to torrey.admissions@biola.edu to learn more and make a well-informed decision about which path best meets their goal.

What can I do after I graduate with this program?

The Career Outlook and Preparation section of this page provides some initial ideas. Employers from across the job spectrum are looking for the virtues and skills that you will acquire in the PPE degree. You’ll also have the chance to apply for a variety of internships while you are in the program to help you explore your career interests. We encourage prospective students to speak with their admissions counselor or academic advisor to schedule a meeting with the director to talk through your professional goals and how PPE and other majors can help you meet them.
