Violinist Orest Smovzh, First Prize Winner of the 2015 Tadeusz Wronski International Solo Violin Competition, has a burgeoning international career. A native of Lviv, Ukraine, Smovzh has degrees from Tchaikovsky National Musical Academy of Ukraine and the Yong Siew Toh Conservatory of Music, Singapore. He has performed as a soloist and chamber musician throughout Europe and East Asia. Orest studied with Qian Zhou, the Head of Strings at the Yong Siew Toh Conservatory, while studying chamber music under Bernard Lanskey, the Director of that Conservatory. He was mentored at Kiev’s Tchaikovsky National Music Academy by Dmytro Tkachenko, the Artistic Director. A writer about music as well as a performer, Orest Smovzh plays a role in his nation’s current culture, having commissioned and performed several dozen compositions by Ukrainian composers. He has been the Artistic Director of several music festivals, including the groundbreaking, village-‐rooted annual Dzenzelivka Summer Music Festival, which he founded in 2010. He is currently a Starling Fellow at the USC Thornton School of Music, where he studies under the tutelage of Professor Midori Goto.

Jiayi Shi maintains an active schedule as a chamber musician and collaborative pianist. She works extensively with the internationally renowned violinist Midori, and made her New York recital debut with Midori in March 2004. She has also collaborated with violinists Martin Chalifour and Ryu Goto in recitals throughout the United States. In addition to numerous chamber performances, Ms. Shi often plays solo piano recitals in North America and in her native China to critical acclaim. Ms. Shi received both a master’s degree and the Performance Certificate in Piano from Eastman School of Music, and completed her Doctor of Musical Arts at the Manhattan School of Music. She is currently a Studio Artist at Biola University.
