Talk Title: Planetary Defense from Asteroids and Comets
Talk Description: One of the hazards to life on Earth is the potential risk of being struck by asteroids or comets (essentially space rocks), known as Near Earth Objects (NEOs). The aerospace community would like to detect hazardous space objects in advance and deflect them before they impact Earth and cause damage. Dr. Melamed’s talk introduces the NEO threat, and demonstrates how a web-based NEO Deflection App (NDA), developed jointly by The Aerospace Corporation and NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL), can be used to design NEO deflection missions.
