The Story Behind the Work

In The Parable of the Talents, Millard Sheets and longtime collaborator Susan Lautmann Hertel depict six scenes from the story told by Jesus Christ in Matthew 25:14–30, in which a master entrusts his wealth to three servants before traveling to a far country. To the two who wisely invest and multiply their resources, the master declares upon his return, “Well done, good and faithful servants. Ye have been faithful over a few things. I will make ye rulers over many things.”

This piece was originally created by Sheets for a branch of the First Federal Savings and Loan bank in Dallas, Texas. After the branch closed down, much of the artwork was relocated, and the history of the piece remains largely unknown before its gifting to Biola University. Sheets’ legacy of celebrating business and trade with art is honored by the piece’s home within Biola University’s Crowell School of Business, displayed as a reminder of our calling to be kingdom influencers who faithfully steward all that the Lord entrusts to us.

About the Artist

Millard Sheets

Millard Sheets was a prominent American artist and educator, best known for his iconic murals that adorn midcentury bank buildings throughout Southern California and beyond. Beginning in the 1950s, businessman Howard F. Ahmanson Sr. commissioned Sheets to create mosaics, sculptures and signage for dozens of Home Savings & Loan branches across the country, including prominent locations in Hollywood, Beverly Hills and Los Angeles. Many of these remain visible on buildings across the LA area, including on Chase Bank buildings. Beyond his work in bank architecture, Sheets also created hundreds of commissions for churches, libraries and universities, including the famed mural Word of Life at the University of Notre Dame, better known as “Touchdown Jesus.”

Susan Hertel

Susan Bright Lautmann Hertel was an American painter with a rich career, primarily focused on mural work and the natural world. Hertel studied at Scripps College in Claremont, California, where she studied with Millard Sheets, who she went on to work with for 26 years. She also studied at the Kann Art Institute in Los Angeles. Hertel collaborated closely with Millard Sheets on many of his extensive mural and architecture projects, and used the skills she developed in mural painting to create personal works featuring her family members and animals. After Sheets’ retirement, Hertel continued to design murals for his studio. She moved to New Mexico, and began a new chapter of work that reflected the local geography and character. She continued to love animals and care for horses and other creatures throughout her life, often incorporating them into her artistic work.
