It has been a year since Talbot launched the Biola Research Initiative for Chinese Theology, and we are truly grateful for the Lord’s abundant blessings throughout this journey. The Initiative has received tireless and cordial support from the Talbot and Biola communities.
In this first year, the initiative has explored partnership opportunities, sharpened its ministry direction, and laid the groundwork for a strong public presence. By God’s grace, the initiative has established partnerships with several Chinese Christian ministries, such as ChinaSource, the Far East Broadcasting Company, Life for Christ Broadcasting, WeDevote (Christian Literature Ministry), CrossPoint Church, and other organizations. Through these partnerships and other collaborations, the initiative has been grateful for opportunities to participate in more than 10 events and to contribute roughly 10 articles and papers shared among Chinese communities in North America, China, and Southeast Asia.
It also operates a YouTube channel that offers discussions on theology, apologetics, Christian philosophy, and biblical studies. To date, about 15 videos have been produced in collaboration with affiliated scholars. Through these efforts, we hope to bring the fruits of theological research to Chinese communities worldwide, cultivate mutually beneficial partnerships, and enhance the visibility of Biola and Talbot within the Chinese-speaking world.
In its second and third years, the initiative seeks to establish a collaborative platform or network that connects scholars and pastors. One of the most pressing needs among Chinese churches today is to bridge the gap between theological studies, education, and church ministry — which is the content of the initiative’s “three-in-one” mission.
The initiative also envisions Biola-Talbot as an interactive hub where theologians and pastors can engage in meaningful dialogue and partnership. To this end, we plan to organize enrichment classes and retreats for Chinese pastors and scholars on campus, and to invite our affiliated scholars and Biola-Talbot faculty to speak in Chinese churches. Our long-term goal is to integrate theological education with church ministry and develop a replicable model that unites seminary training with ecclesial formation in Chinese contexts.
Through these efforts, we hope to help partnering churches become vibrant centers of learning, mission, and cultural engagement. We also look forward to introducing other educational programs at Biola and Talbot through our partnerships with churches and organizations. We sincerely covet your prayers and support, as the work ahead requires wisdom, strength, and resources from the Lord.
