There are several seminars offered on a variety of topics including: financial services, general information, how to parent a college student, special and study abroad programs, career planning and Bible curriculum. There is also a special Parent Hospitality Tent that will be open on Friday and Saturday of Orientation Weekend. We recommend that you stop by to meet our council members and learn about resources in the area and on-campus.

The Office of Parent Relations sponsors two highly-recommended events during Orientation weekend, the Parent Dessert Reception on Friday evening and the Parent Luncheon on Saturday. Both events are a wonderful time to meet other parents, become acquainted with the Parent Council and enjoy wonderful food.

The entire family is encouraged to attend the Outdoor Dinner and Communion Service on Saturday evening. There is an additional cost for more than two people at the Parent Luncheon on Saturday.

Although family members are welcome and encouraged to come to orientation, the ages of the children should be considered when parents are determining which events to attend as many of the events include speakers. Many families choose to make alternate arrangements for their younger siblings (babysitters, drop-off at amusement parks, etc.) during the day on Saturday, so parents may focus on the orientation events.

No guests or family members are able to accompany the new Biola student to the mandatory Student Orientation activities, nor will the new Biola student be free to watch their younger siblings while their parents attend sessions on Saturday. 20. How often should I visit my student? How often should they come home during the semester?

There are a variety of factors that must be considered when determining how frequently parents visit their students and how often students visit their parents. This is of course an individual decision between students and their parents, however we do have a few suggestions.

Come to Parent Weekend! This is a special event that is scheduled each October where parents have the opportunity to visit chapel, sit in on classes, attend a concert or sporting event, attend church with their student and meet their student's friends. The timing of this event is planned to give your student enough time to settle in, but also it's planned at a time when many students start to get a little homesick.

Visit your student, but please: no surprises. Homework, jobs and social activities tend to fill up a student's schedule. Allow your student time to plan ahead.

  21. What churches are near the campus?

To stay connected with the University parents can sign up to be part of our weekly parent e-mail news update, monthly prayer e-mail group or receive a weekly edition of the Chimes, the student newspaper. To stay connected to your student we encourage you to send letters and care packages to your student and that service is available through our Hugs from Home program.

Parents are also encouraged to attend Parent Weekend in October each year and sporting events or music performances on campus or in your local area.

Parents also have the opportunity to give to Biola out of their financial resources through our parent fundraising project, currently the chapel seating expansion, or in support of any of the current fundraising projects. Visit our Development website for more information.

  28. What Career Service help is available to my student?

The Mission of the Career Services Department is to educate, prepare, empower and serve the students, alumni and extended community of Biola in the process of career development and placement. The services offered by the department include, but are not limited to, assistance in choosing a major and career field by means of career counseling and coaching, career assessment, major selection, internship assistance and listing, career planning courses and a career resource library.

As students prepare to graduate and look for jobs, Career Services offers annual career fairs and on-campus recruiting, job listings, local employer information, internet resources, reference files and resume assistance. It also falls around midterms when students often need some encouragement and to see a face from home. Parents, siblings, grandparents and any other family members are highly encouraged to come. It's a valuable time for both you and your student to interact and help make their Biola experience more complete. Look for more details on this year's Parent Weekend .
