The California College Media Association recognized Biola’s student-run newspaper and magazine, respectively. The Point magazine, awarded third place in the magazine category, and The Chimes newspaper, awarded first place in multiple categories, were rated against hundreds of college media from nearly 40 schools across the state including UCLA, USC and U.C. Berkeley.

The Point received third place for General Excellence in the magazine category.

“The judges complimented our issue on having the best overall consistent style and feel with well-written articles,” said Point editor-in-chief Patricia Diaz. “We were pleased with our placing, considering the competition.”

Diaz reflected on the hard work and uniqueness of her staff.

“Because students from all majors can work on the magazine, you see a great amount of diversity reflected in our issues,” said Diaz. “This year, we have English majors, film students, and art majors, in addition to journalism majors on staff. I love working with every person to bring out their unique gifts and talents, and see how all our skills come together to produce something that is stronger than any one person could do on their own.”

The Chimes proved its competence in writing, design and photography, winning multiple awards in seven different categories, doubling its awards from last year.  The newspaper earned first place in Overall Design, Best Personal Opinion Column, and Best Blog.

Elizabeth Sallie, editor-in-chief of The Chimes, expressed her excitement in the newspaper’s increasing growth and accomplishment.

“It was super humbling and rewarding to us to be recognized for something that we’ve been focusing on improving — our web and page design,” said Sallie.  “It was extremely gratifying and totally humbling to see that all those efforts have been paying off.”

Sallie specifically mentioned the significance of one award-winning piece with a clearly Christian tone. Chase Andre’s article describing his experience living in the Hollenbeck House, a 10-month intentional community program led by Biola professor Larry Smith, won first place in its category.

“Not very many Christian schools compete, so one of the things we’re consistently excited about and impressed by is to be able to compete on a statewide scale,” said Sallie.
