On Wednesday, March 26, Biola University celebrated Women’s History Month with a special chapel, luncheon, and breakout sessions. Keynote speaker Katelyn Beaty, managing editor for Christianity Today, spoke about the significant role women played in the resurrection story. Ruby Award recipients were recognized at chapel and received their awards during a luncheon on Metzger Lawn.

The Ruby Awards were based on this year's Women's History Month theme “Aspire,” celebrating women who are Motivated by Passion, Leaving a Legacy.

Dr. Cassandra Van Zandt, Biola’s associate provost for core curriculum, was presented with the Priscilla Ruby Award for excellence in teaching and mentoring. The Deborah Ruby Award for leadership and wisdom was given to Biola senior Esther Perumalla. Alumna Carole MacIntyre received the Esther Award for obedience and servanthood. Suzanne Crowell, a vital contributor and supporter of the Biola community, was presented with the presidential Anna Horton Ruby Award for lifetime commitment and service to the university.

After the luncheon, attendees were given the opportunity to attend special breakout sessions in the Andrew’s Banquet Room and Lehman Board Room. Session speakers Judy TenElshof, Nancy Hornberger and Heather Hoerdemann each led discussion on specific topics including finding courage in life and in the workplace, building relationships for influence, and leading from where you are. A showing of documentary “Miss Representation” was also offered as an additional breakout session option.

Throughout the month of March, Biola hosted a baby item drive in support of nonprofit organization Generation Her. Biola alumna Dianna Smiley founded Generations Her, which hosts weekly programs for teen mothers and pregnant teens.
