Sharon Soper (‘80), nurse practitioner and author of Soybeans and the Kingdom of God: An Approach to Wholistic Mission, received this year’s Nursing Alumni of the Year award for her impact on nurses and health workers in her community. Currently, she works at Queen’s Care Health and Faith Partnership in Los Angeles as the Parish Nurse Manager where she oversees sixteen faith-based nurses and five community health workers.

A missionary at heart, Soper worked as a Spanish-speaking nurse health educator in domestic violence shelters and as a missionary nurse in Bolivia from 1982-1988. Soper graduated from Biola’s nursing program in 1980 and earned an M.A. in Intercultural Studies and a D.Miss. in Missiology from Biola University’s Cook School of Intercultural Studies. Her 1994 book Soybeans and the Kingdom of God: An Approach to Wholistic Mission focuses on pairing her medical background with ministry on the mission field.

“Proclaiming the gospel message to lost souls was fulfilling the Great Commission, but this also included addressing the needs of the whole person,” said Soper. “A holistic soybean ministry was just another way to share the love of Christ.”

She is also an active member of the San Marino Church of the Nazarene.
