B.S.E., Princeton University; M.A., Ph.D., University of Southern California.
Dr. Thurber's research interests are in the areas of number theory, algorithms, and combinatorial optimization. He has published many papers on addition chains, matching, and other combinatorial optimization problems.
Walt Stangl, Ph.D.
Associate Professor
B.A., M.S., Ph.D., Lehigh University; M. Div., Denver Seminary
Dr. Stangl's research interests are in number theory, history of mathematics, and integration of faith and learning. He has written several papers, and has developed Christian perspectives on mathematics within the curriculum. Newton and Pascal are two of his favorite examples of Christian mathematicians. Infinity is his favorite idea used to connect mathematics and theology. He serves as the department's program coordinator for the single subject mathematics teacher preparation program.
Shieu-Hong Lin, Ph.D.
Assistant Professor
B.S., M.S., National Taiwan University; M.Div., Logos Evangelical Seminary; Ph.D., Brown University
Dr. Lin's research interests are in the interdisciplinary areas of artificial intelligence, computer science, and operations research. For solving interesting problems in artificial intelligence, he has been involved in establishing mathematical foundations for proving formal properties and developing algorithms for efficient computation.
Matthew Weathers Fulltime faculty member
B.S. Biola University; M.S. University of Southern California
Mr. Weathers has years of industry experiences in web design, web programming, and database applications. He teaches Nature of Mathematics and several computer science courses.
Peter Woo, Ph.D. Adjunct faculty member
Ph.D., University of Southern California.
Geometry is the main area of Dr. Woo's research, and he has written several papers on topics such as isodynamic points and Apollonius circles of a triangle and isogonal conjugate theorem. For years, Dr. Woo has inspired many of our mathematics majors to participate in the annual Putnam Math Competition for undergraduates in the nation.
Sandra Kavanaugh Adjunct faculty member
B.S., University of Arizona; M.A. Marriage and Family Ministry, Talbot Seminary.
Mrs. Kavanaugh has been teaching math at Biola University since 1989. She particularly enjoys teaching calculus and statistics. She intends to begin work on a Masters in Applied Mathematics at Cal State Fullerton in the fall of 2005. Sandra lives in Orange with her husband and three children.
John Kwak Adjunct faculty member
B.S. Biola University, M.S. California State University at Fullerton, Ed.D. Argosy University.
Dr. Kwak has over eleven years' experience of teaching mathematics in secondary schools in the ABC Unified School District, four years at California State University at Fullerton (CSUF), and one year teaching at Biola University. His experience includes teaching pre-algebra, Algebra I, geometry, Algebra II, statistics, and trigonometry/math analysis at Whitney High School and Gahr High School, business calculus, college algebra, and nature of mathematics at CSUF, and classical geometry at Biola university.
Marty Myers Staff, secretary of the Mathematics and Computer Science Department
Mrs Myers is knowledgeable and tender hearted like a mother to all our students, a great resource to inquirers, and a great help to the department.
