On June 8, 2011, the Fullerton Police Department arrested Trevor Harwell, a former Biola University student and technician for a local computer service company, who is accused of planting spyware on dozens of computers in order to photograph unsuspecting women in their homes.
Biola University’s Campus Safety Department has been cooperating with law enforcement agencies during the course of their investigation of Harwell, and will continue to assist law enforcement as needed. Harwell was dismissed from the University in the fall of 2010 in connection with the investigation by the Fullerton Police Department and is no longer enrolled or associated with the University. He was never employed by Biola University’s Office of Information Technology.
According to Fullerton police, Harwell used a program called “Camcapture” that was installed on his victims’ hard drives. The security of Biola’s network was not compromised.
The Fullerton Police Department requests that persons who believe they may be a victim of Trevor Harwell contact their local police department or Fullerton Police Detective Kathryn Hamel at (714) 738-5327. Students who believe that Harwell worked on their computers may bring them to Biola's Information Technology Helpdesk to have them inspected free of charge.
More information can be found at the Fullerton Police Department’s website.
