Biola’s biblical convictions may be rock solid, but its mascot just got a whole lot squishier.
This fall, the university introduced a limited-edition line of Eddie the Eagle-themed stuffed animals, affectionately known as “SquishEagles.” Inspired by the current cultural craze over ovoid plushies, the custom-designed collectibles were created by the Office of University Communications and Marketing as a fun giveaway — a way to boost school spirit and give some lucky students an unexpected keepsake.
“With all the current popularity of squishy round stuffed animals, we figured, ‘Why not get Eddie in on the fun?’” said Brenda Velasco, senior director of communications, who helped to hatch the SquishEagle idea. “It turns out that he makes for a pretty comfy pillow and dorm decoration.”
The SquishEagles’ debut came in November with “Classic Eddie,” a friendly faced eagle holding a red Biola pennant. Plans are in the works to introduce more variations in the months ahead, each with their own distinct outfits and accessories.
“I don’t want to give too much away, but let’s just say that Eddie is as well-rounded as our students are,” Velasco said. “Don’t be surprised to see him studying in the classroom, hitting the beach or cheering on our student-athletes.”
For now, the only way to get your hands on a SquishEagle is through a little bit of luck and by being in the right place at the right time — though following @biolauniversity on Instagram can help. (With some help from the life-sized Eddie the Eagle mascot, university staff have been distributing SquishEagles to students on random days during the semester, sometimes offering a location hint ahead of time on social media.) But be on the lookout: Eddie may soon be available to fly to a kid-at-heart near you, with plans to offer SquishEagles online and through the Biola Store later in 2026.
