TESOL: Teaching Speaking

Cook School of Intercultural Studies

About this Course

It takes more than being able to speak English well to teach speaking. In this course, you’ll learn what that entails for learners at different levels, considerations for choosing textbooks, lesson sequences, and teacher roles. You’ll be introduced to eight different techniques for building the skills learners need to speak accurately and fluently, from drills to information gaps to question cards.

You’ll also learn six techniques to get learners to use their skills in real communication. This course concludes with a lesson on teaching conversation classes, where you’ll get some practical ideas for getting students to speak about a variety of topics in English.
