Message from the Chief
On behalf of the Campus Safety Department, I would like to welcome you to our home on the web. Whether you are a current student, faculty or staff member, or someone exploring educational or employment opportunities at Biola University, I am grateful for your interest in the work of Campus Safety.
Biola University is a special place to learn and grow. Our team of dedicated staff and student personnel care deeply about the well-being and protection of our community. We are committed to serving with excellence and integrity at all times. Biola is located in La Mirada, one of the safest communities in the region, and benefits from a strong partnership with the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department at the La Mirada Station, located just across the street from campus.
Let me share with you an overview of the Campus Safety Department and the services we provide to support our community:
- Field Operations — Provides 24/7 patrol, crime prevention, safety escorts, response to emergencies, medical calls, and student support. Our officers include armed personnel operating under strict accountability, student cadets assisting with escorts, traffic, and parking, and gate attendants monitoring campus access.
- Communications and Emergency Operations — Operates our Communications Center, monitoring alarms, security cameras, emergency notifications, the Rave Guardian safety app, and the campus public address system.
- Administrative Operations — Oversees parking management, permits, citation appeals, bicycle registration, access control, and general inquiries.
- Travel Safety & Risk Mitigation (TSRM) — Prepares and supports university-sponsored travel through risk assessments, training, and crisis management resources.
- Community Outreach Unit — Builds partnerships across our diverse campus community, providing training, accountability systems, and outreach programs.
- Emergency Preparedness — Coordinates the University’s Emergency Response Team (ERT), conducts emergency training, drills, and preparedness education for students, faculty, and staff.
- Emergency Medical Technicians (EMTs) — Provides after-hours medical response through Campus Safety Officers trained as EMTs in partnership with the Student Health Center.
- First Aid/CPR Training — Offers training for student travel, campus groups, and Campus Safety personnel.
- Self-Defense Training — Provides physical assault prevention classes (RADS) through the Department of Physical Education.
At the heart of all these programs is our highest priority: the protection and safety of Biola’s students, faculty, staff, and visitors. In addition to these efforts, we maintain an emergency notification system to quickly alert the community in the event of an emergency.
I invite you to learn more about our services and policies, as well as crime statistics from the past three years, in our Annual Security and Fire Safety Report. Most importantly, I encourage you to share your suggestions on how we can continue to improve our services.
Thank you for entrusting us with the privilege of serving you.
