Welcome to the Department of Nursing
On behalf of the faculty and staff of the Department of Nursing, I welcome you to the exciting learning opportunities which await you in nursing education at Biola University. The faculty, representing experts within their nursing specialties, are ready to teach, guide, mentor and support you through your learner-centered journey. As a student nurse you will learn to provide competent professional nursing care in our skills and simulation labs, on a variety of acute care hospital units, in community and public health agencies, on city streets and across international borders. Your Biola Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) degree will qualify you to sit for the registered nurse (RN) licensure examination and to enter the profession globally recognized as the primary health care givers of the world. The Biola difference is maturation of your personal Christian walk while learning to provide competent Christian nursing care. We believe that professional nursing is worship of God through Christian care of the biological, psychological, social-cultural and spiritual health of the person and community across the lifespan.
Biola nursing education is a unique learner-centered experience incorporating Christian faith into evidence-based theoretical content and diverse clinical opportunities. Qualified nursing faculty utilize multiple teaching methods to assist the student in comprehension and application of informed care. Methods include limited traditional lecture, group learning activities, validation of skills learned, learned content and skills application in clinical settings throughout all nursing courses, required student dedicated reading and study, written examinations, nursing assessment and care of clients and communities, scholarly writing, communication exercises, and development of critical thinking and Christian spiritual care competency. Clinical learning experiences include Magnet Recognition agencies and international elective rotations.
We are excited to offer learning through high fidelity simulation. Manikin simulation allows students to practice assessment, critical thinking, skills, decision-making and problem solving in a non-threatening environment at no risk to a live patient. Faculty create scenarios tailored to theory content that provide specific experiences that students may not otherwise be exposed to in the clinical faculty.
The Department of Nursing web site provides admission criteria and the nursing courses required to earn your BSN. We are vigilant in maintaining quality evidence-based content and process and thus this information is subject to change at any time.
The future of the Department of Nursing is one of expectation and anticipation. On the horizon we await the building of and relocation to a new science building and the development of a graduate nursing program. In addition to potential students, we welcome inquiry from Christian master’s and doctorally prepared nurses who would be interested in a joining our dynamic faculty.
Thank you for considering Biola University Department of Nursing. Please contact us at 562-903-4850 for further information and guidance. May God bless you as you seek His direction.
