Sociology is the study of social life, social change, and the social causes and consequences of human behavior through the investigation of the structure of groups, organizations, and societies, and how people interact within these contexts. Sociologists utilize a range of research methodologies to study such varied aspects of social life as the family, crime, gender, race and ethnicity, and religion and values in everyday life.

The sociology major is designed to prepare graduates for career opportunities in social work, politics, law, criminal justice, counseling and other service professions. The Bachelor of Arts degree in Sociology will also prepare students for graduate study in several areas, including sociology, social welfare, law, urban planning, and Christian ministry.

The fascination of sociology lies in the fact that its perspective makes us see in a new light the very world in which we have lived all of our lives. It can be said that the first wisdom of sociology is this—things are not what they seem. People who like to avoid shocking discoveries should stay away from sociology.
