Safety, Security and Transportation


  1. Residents will be issued a key for their residence hall room or apartment. Apartment keys may also open security gates and/or laundry rooms.
  2. Keys are never to be loaned to another individual. Violators may receive a Campus Safety citation and disciplinary action.
  3. Due to the potential for theft, rooms and apartments are always to be kept locked when residents are not present.
  4. Students who lose or have their housing key stolen during the semester, or who do not return their key at designated check-out times will be charged a rekey fee of $75. See also Check-Out Procedures > Check-Out Fines. Lost or stolen keys should be reported to the Housing & Residence Life Office.
  5. Students who break their room key may have it replaced for a minimum charge by reporting it to the Housing & Residence Life Office.
  6. Students locked out of their room or apartment may be assigned by Housing & Residence Life staff between 9:00 a.m. and midnight for a small fee ($1.00). From midnight to 9:00 a.m., or if no Housing & Residence Life staff member is available, Campus Safety may be called at (562) 903-6000. Students who continually need to be let into their room may have the lock out fee increased incrementally by Housing & Residence Life staff.

University ID

  1. The Card Office provides students with an official Biola ID card, known as the Eagle ID. The Eagle ID is offered as both a physical card and digital card and allows access to essential university resources. Card uses include access-controlled buildings, library privileges, on-campus dining, Biola Store purchases, printing, Fitness Center privileges, chapel attendance/spiritual development tracking, Biola Shuttle transportation and more.
  2. The digital Eagle ID is the default ID card type. If a student would like a physical ID in addition to or instead of a digital ID, they can contact the ID Card Office. A physical ID Card will be issued at no cost upon admission to the university. Cards are not re-issued for free each school year. With proper care and handling cards can last 5 years or more.
  3. Students must have their Biola Eagle ID with them at all times on campus. Eagle IDs must be presented upon request to any university faculty or staff member.
  4. Misplaced ID cards: Students may put a temporary hold on their physical or digital Eagle ID card to prevent unauthorized use. To mark a card lost/found, login to eAccounts, or use the Transact eAccounts mobile app from a smart phone. Alternately, students may contact Campus Safety to deactivate lost cards.
  5. Replacement physical ID cards can be purchased for $20 in the ID Card Office, located in the Student Services Building.
  6. Biola Eagle ID cards may not, under any circumstances, be given to another individual for use. This includes, but is not limited to, allowing another to use the ID card to access buildings or gates on campus, use a dining plan, or use the Library. Loaning an ID card to another individual is a security risk and will result in disciplinary action.
  7. Students who misrepresent themselves through use of another’s ID Card or linked accounts will be subject to disciplinary action.
  8. No photos, stickers or other decorations are to be placed on physical ID cards, otherwise they will be considered to be invalid. If an ID card is deemed invalid by any department on campus, a new ID card will be made at the student’s expense.

Authorized Entry & Entry By Biola Personnel

  1. Residence hall and apartment entrances are locked 24 hours per day and are only accessible using a digital or physical Biola ID card or key. Only residents of a particular building may access their building between the hours of 12 a.m. and 6:30 a.m. daily.
  2. For security reasons, to prevent unauthorized entry to buildings and rooms residents may not prop open or leave open building or room/apartment doors or gates, or leave ground-level windows open. Residents must not leave room keys outside the door or tape door latches open. Violators may receive a Campus Safety citation and/or disciplinary action. Room doors may be left open only during Open House hours.
  3. Residents must not let other individuals into buildings unless that person has a valid Biola ID card.
  4. University personnel can enter rooms for assessment of repairs, cleaning, or in an emergency, for health and safety inspections, to enforce rules and regulations, and to show partial vacancies to prospective students.

Room Searches

University officials, including Campus Safety and Housing & Residence Life personnel, may enter student residence hall rooms, apartments, or other university housing to contact residents or to conduct searches for any of the following reasons, when authorized by the Vice President for Student Development, the Associate Vice President & Chief of Campus Safety, or their designee:

  1. To investigate a report of illegal activity or when there is a reason to believe illegal activity is taking place or has taken place;
  2. To investigate a report of a violation of university policy or when there is reason to believe a violation of university policy is taking place or has taken place;When there is a health or safety concern, or to investigate reports of threats to health or safety;
  3. To conduct welfare checks;
  4. To investigate missing student reports;
  5. With the consent of a resident.

Fire Safety

  1. Tampering with fire equipment in any way is considered a misdemeanor under county and state law. This includes, but is not limited to:
  2. Violators, including students who pull fire alarms under false pretenses, will be charged for repair costs, cited by Campus Safety, and may face legal prosecution which could include jail terms.
  3. Students who fail to evacuate buildings during a fire alarm will be fined and may face disciplinary action.
  4. Replacements for damaged or missing smoke/heat detectors will cost at least $150.

  6. Per fire code, all stairwells, walkways, hallways and balcony walkways must remain clear of furnishings, trash and personal belongings after check-in week.
