Nearly every February, the Biola Opera Theatre presents fully-staged productions of major operas, operettas, and musicals accompanied by the Biola Symphony Orchestra. The cast is drawn solely from our undergraduate voice majors with an occasional guest artist.
Since its inception under the direction of Dr. Jeanne Robison, Voice Area Coordintor in 1996, the Opera Theatre has produced HMS Pinafore, Cosi fan tutte, The Marriage of Figaro, The Magic Flute, Carousel, Don Giovanni, Carmen, The Merry Wives of Windsor, Into the Woods, Dialogues of the Carmelites, Little Women, and Puccici's Suor Angelica and Gianno Schicchi.
In addition, for the three of the past four spring semesters, upper classmen volunteers have directed freshmen and sophomore music majors in a program of operatic scenes selected especially for the talents of all students wishing to participate.
The Opera Theatre is directed by Mr. Richard Zeller, Associate Professor of Voice and Director of Opera. Guest Directors have included Barry Cavin, former Director of Theatre, baritone Todd Ranney, and musical theater star, Amick Byram.
Alumni from the Opera Program have gone on to complete Masters and Doctorate degrees at top graduate schools in the US and abroad including Eastman, Peabody, Manhattan School of Music, AJ Fletcher Opera Program, University of Southern CA, University of Michigan, Boston University, Florida State and Guild Hall in London. Several graduates have gone on to international operatic careers, notably Katie Van Kooten.
Auditions for Opera Theatre are usually held the first Friday of the fall semester from 3:30-6:00p.m.
