Seeds of Contemplation

Featuring artwork by Kiyomi Fukui and Greg Lookerse

Cost and Admission

This event is free to attend.

The Earl & Virginia Green Art Gallery is proud to present SEEDS OF CONTEMPLATION. This exhibition features artwork by Long Beach based artist Kiyomi Fukui and Biola Art alumnus Greg Lookerse (class of 2009).

Every moment and every event of every man’s life on earth plants something in his soul. For just as the wind carries thousands of invisible and visible winged seeds, so the stream of time brings with it germs of spiritual vitality that come to rest imperceptibly in the minds and wills of men. Most of these unnumbered seeds perish and are lost, because men are not prepared to receive them. — Thomas Merton, Seeds of Contemplation (1949)

Like Merton, these two artists — Kiyomi Fukui and Greg Lookerse — encourage and challenge us to put off the many distractions of modern life, slow down, and prepare ourselves to be more receptive to the quiet and unassuming seeds of “spiritual vitality” that surround us.

Also featuring: Kiyomi Fukui's "Apologetic Garden", an interactive public-engagement project where visitors are invited to write letters of apology and bury them in the temporary planter boxes on the patio in front of the gallery. Over the course of the exhibition the collection of planted letters will give rise to a vibrant vegetable garden. Please visit the art gallery for more information and to participate.

The exhibition is on view July 22 - September 20, 2019.
