The rise in popularity of Klezmer music over the past 20 years is due in part to its reputation as the party music of the Jews of Eastern Europe, but there is more. As a folk style it offers a unique approach to musical expression through the use of specific scales and stylized ornamentation that tickles the Western ear with a soulful, exotic appeal. For this reason, Klezmer has been successfully fused with current pop music, punk, rock, jazz, and other musical forms making it relevant for today’s listeners.

Clarinetist Gary Gould has performed authentic Klezmer music for special events in Southern California for over 20 years. Initially sparked by a desire to cast a wider net as a working musician, Gould was initially surprised to discover that the story of Klezmer music coming to America in the early 1900s was a reflection of his own family’s unspoken heritage. In the 90s he sojourned to the East Coast to study with surviving Klezmer luminaries and returned with a treasure trove of melodies, traditions and tales from the Old Country.

Gary Gould is an educator and a graduate of Cal State Fullerton with career highlights that include teaching for the Orange County School of the Arts, Irvine Valley College and privately, as well as performing as soloist and concertmaster with the award-winning Laguna Concert Band.
