Authenticity is the gold standard in Western culture, and Jesus encourages this in Matthew 6. However, as Christians, we sometimes go too far in throwing out all spiritual disciplines that might feel forced or fake. Jesus teaches, however, that the right appropriation of spiritual disciplines will lead to a proper authenticity that help us live integrated lives with undivided hearts.
