We often relate the concept of courage to our abilities, actions, and overt demonstrations of strength. Focusing on the courage to confront others, boldly face danger, or act in such a way that garners respect are certainly all attributes of courage. However, in many ways this narrow perspective confines us to the external, tangible, and overly- masculinized persona of courage. What of the mess, beauty, and vulnerability in Christ-like courage? Join Dr. Arianna Molloy in a conversation about the courage to slow down in the midst of hurry, to reject cynicism in times of uncertainty, and to have hope even when it leaves you vulnerable.

Speakers

Arianna Molloy

Dr. Arianna Molloy is a full-time, tenure-track Assistant Professor in the Department of Communication Studies at Biola University, CA, where she teaches courses in: Organizational Communication, Small Group Communication, Research Methods, Nonverbal Communication, and Communication and Calling. Her love for teaching is reflected in a variety of outstanding achievement awards, such as the Provost Award for “Excellence in Teaching,” naming her the best teacher in 2014 at Biola University (voted on by her fellow faculty members), and the “Faculty Excellence” award (voted by the Fall 2014 graduating class). Her research focus is in organizational communication, meaningful work, and work as a calling (involving factors that impact motivation, sustained loyalty and satisfaction, as well as significant costs such as burnout). Her recent publication, in the International Journal of Business Communication, focuses on the way business values are navigated and negotiated in nonprofit work.

In addition to being an active speaker in academic settings, Arianna works as a consultant for non-profit organizations and a speech coach for business professionals. She is passionate about helping people develop evaluative and analytical communication skills in order to discern underlying messages, cultivate their faith in all spheres of life, and make a positive impact in local and global communities. Arianna’s commitment to service is evident in conducting several communication workshops for undergraduate and graduate programs such as: Nonverbal communication in business, Preparing for post-college life: A year of networking instead of a year of uncertainty, and Cultivating perseverance and discernment: The necessity for mentorship and Sabbath. Arianna is currently working on publication projects related to work as a calling. She is originally from Seattle, Washington and recently married Dr. Allen Yeh, a professor in the Cook School of Intercultural Studies. Her favorite author is C.S. Lewis. She has a heart for mentorship, loves coffee, hiking, running half marathons, cooking, and movies.
