It has been described as a fire in your belly, a long love affair, a journey, and an opportunity to worship the Lord: work. What is work? Is it simply toil, an extension of the Curse, and just really boring? It’s true that work can be just a job. But work can also be something else; it can be an opportunity to move beyond the functional and to experience the meaningful. In fact, how we define work ultimately impacts how we approach the rest of life. Considering that the average person changes jobs approximately 10 times between the age of 18 and 42, and work constitutes more than 1/3 of our adult lives, it is clear that work matters. Dr. Molloy will explore the important connection between work and calling, how to make use of seasons where it seems like you are waiting, and what it means to experience deep satisfaction as you pursue your calling.

Speakers

Arianna Molloy

Dr. Arianna Molloy is a full-time, tenure-track Assistant Professor in the Department of Communication Studies at Biola University, CA, where she teaches courses in: Organizational Communication, Small Group Communication, Research Methods, Nonverbal Communication, and Communication and Calling. Her research focus is in organizational communication, meaningful work, and work as a calling (involving factors that impact motivation, sustained loyalty and satisfaction, as well as significant costs such as burnout). Her recent publication, in the International Journal of Business Communication, focuses on the way business values are navigated and negotiated in nonprofit work.

In addition to being an active speaker in academic settings, Arianna works as a consultant for non-profit organizations and a speech coach for business professionals. She is passionate about helping people develop evaluative and analytical communication skills in order to discern underlying messages, cultivate their faith in all spheres of life, and make a positive impact in local and global communities. Arianna’s commitment to service is evident in conducting several communication workshops for undergraduate and graduate programs such as: Nonverbal communication in business, Preparing for post-college life: A year of networking instead of a year of uncertainty, and Cultivating perseverance and discernment: The necessity for mentorship and Sabbath. Arianna is currently working on publication projects related to work as a calling. She is originally from Seattle, Washington and recently married Dr. Allen Yeh, a professor in the Cook School of Intercultural Studies. Her favorite author is C.S. Lewis.
