Heralded as “bright voiced” (Los Angeles Times) and possessing a voice that exudes “warmth and affection” (The Herald, Carmel, Calif.), soprano Robyn Frey-Monell's versatile vocal style has enabled her to actively perform repertoire spanning the operatic, oratorio, recital and musical theater genres. She has been a featured soloist with the Carmel Bach Festival, Concordia University Irvine, the Long Beach Chorale, the Long Beach Mozart Festival, the Irvine Camerata and the Orlando Chorale. She has performed vast amounts of opera chorus and symphonic choral repertoire with Opera Pacific and the Los Angeles Master Chorale, and toured with the Gilbert and Sullivan troupe Opera a la Carte. Frey-Monell has performed under the batons of such conductors as Claudio Abbado, Leonard Bernstein, John Mauceri, Zubin Mehta, Riccardo Muti, Simon Rattle, Mstilav Rostropovich, Esa-Pekka Salonen and Hugh Wolf. She has participated in recordings with the New York Philharmonic, the Philadelphia Orchestra and the Los Angeles Philharmonic, and has performed in Festivals throughout the United States and Italy, including the Spoleto Festival and Festival dei due mondi.
A dedicated and committed teacher, Frey-Monell holds degrees from Columbia University Teachers College, University of California Irvine and Westminster Choir College. Her scholarly research has centered on motivation, self-regulation and how students learn. Two of her articles have appeared in the National Association of Teachers of Singing Journal of Singing. Frey-Monell has adjudicated the regional hearings for Classical Singer Magazine's National College Competition and the Utah State Fair Vocal Competition. Locally, she has been an active adjudicator for the Long Beach Mozart Festival, Manhattan Beach School District, Music Teachers Association of California, NATS-Los Angeles Chapter, Southern California Vocal Association and Los Angeles Music Center's prestigious Spotlight Awards.
Frey-Monell is a member of the American Guild of Musical Artists (AGMA), the College Music Society (CMS) and the National Association of Teachers of Singing (NATS), where she serves on the Executive Board of the Los Angeles Chapter. In 2018, she was awarded one of seven national NATS Emerging Leader Awards. This biennial grant program with partial funding from the NATS Foundation is designed to recognize teachers of singing with no more than 10 years of full-time teaching experience who are active at the chapter and regional level of NATS.
Frey-Monell currently serves as a studio artist at Biola University’s Conservatory of Music.
