Christmas time is on its way, but you can’t have Christmas at Biola without first considering the Fire Code. Facilities Services has sent out the following info regarding Christmas decorations on campus. Please feel free to call Facilities Management at extension 4897 if you have any questions.
For many of us, Christmas trees are a big part of the holidays. However, state and county fire codes require all live trees to be fireproofed. This requirement applies to all buildings on campus. Live trees must be purchased from a vendor who can treat and tag the tree and issue a fireproof certificate. Using a can of fire retardant spray will not meet the fire code. The vendor’s tag must remain on the tree and the certificate must be presented to Facilities Management before the tree is taken into any building.
You may also be planning to brighten things with strings of holiday lights. Fire code allows temporary use of extension cords for Christmas decorations. However, a maximum of one extension cord may be used per outlet to avoid overloading electrical circuits. If you have any questions about the electrical load capacity in your area, please contact Facilities Management. The fire code also prohibits cords through doorways, ceiling panels, windows, across hallways, high traffic areas, or under any carpets or rugs. Outdoor lights may not be used indoors and no lights may be hung near water sources. Please also be sure to unplug all extension cords and lights before leaving for the Christmas holiday.
If you are trying to liven up trees or halls with Christmas decorations, please make sure you also comply with the following:
- All decorations must be of a fire-retardant material.
- Decorations (including lights) shall not be attached to the ceiling or be placed within 12 inches of the ceiling.
- Decorations also are not to be placed on doors labeled “fire doors” at any time and must not obstruct doorways, hallways, or exit signs in any way. Indoor use of candles or open flames, with the exception of dripless candles, is prohibited unless approved in advance by Facilities Management.
- In accordance with the Student Housing Handbook, the burning of candles and/or incense is not permitted in student housing areas at any time.
So, around the holidays please keep in mind that these rules and regulations are for your safety and for the safety of those around you. We thank you in advance for your compliance with these requirements.
