Hey guys! Did you know that Biola Athletics was recently bumped up to NCAA (National Collegiate Athletic Association) Division II school? Now, we will be renewing rivalries with schools like California Baptist University, Concordia University, and Azusa Pacific University!

I thought it would be awesome to interview two Biola student athletes from Biola and have them share their experiences, as well as their callings that God has given them.

First, I interviewed Atu Galadima! He is a Sophomore accounting major, who plays on the soccer team at Biola.

Q: What’s your favorite part about being a student athlete at Biola?

A: My favorite part has to be being able to make different connections. Obviously, you make friends in classes, but then you also have a strong-knit community in your sport and other athletes all together because you share things in common.

Q: What funny quirks do you see in your team?

A: I think we’re really playful. We have a lot of personalities on the team, and everybody is always messing around, which is really fun. We take things seriously during practice, but we’re able to mess around together off the field, which is cool.

Q: How do you see God working in your team and also in yourself?

A: I think my team is really good at integrating our Christianity into everything we do. We pray before and after every practice, every game. We have worship sessions before games, where we just sit down and sing worship songs before the game. We have times where we talk about how we’re struggling and what is working during our week emotionally.

Q: What are you looking forward to most being a NCAA Division II soccer team?

A: I’m looking forward to playing a lot better competition, which is going to be really fun. And then, it means that it’s going to be harder, but I like having a challenge. I would also say being able to share our faith with other teams on the field.

Next, I interviewed Alex Talma. He is a Junior Business Marketing Management Major, who plays on the men’s basketball team at Biola.

Q: What’s your favorite part about being a student athlete at Biola?

A: I love being an athlete because of the team environment, the discipline it requires, and the fact that I love to play basketball. I’m grateful that I have this opportunity to continue playing the sport I love after high school.

Q: What funny quirks do you see in your team?

A: We have a really good team with guys that are really fun to be around. They make the road trips fun and we all share a lot of laughs together.

Q: How do you see God working in your team and also in yourself?

A: The team we have is made up of high character guys who care a lot about the team environment and making each other better. We all understand the responsibility we have in being at Biola and being Christian student athletes. Basketball has brought me to a great university where I have been able to grow spiritually, academically and physically with basketball.

Q: What are you looking forward to most being a NCAA Division II soccer team?

A: I’m looking forward to the increased competition of being at Division II level, and to the renewed rivalries and the intense competition we will face. The PacWest conference is very competitive, and I am glad I am able to compete in this conference.

It sure sounds amazing to be involved in Athletics at Biola! Thanks to Atu and Alex for shedding light on the student athlete experience at Biola. GO EAGLES!

Until next time,
