If you’re like me, then you are most likely super excited about living in one of the seven residence halls on campus. Living in the dorms at Biola is the best! You get the choice of living on lower campus in Hart Hall, Hope Hall and Stewart Hall, or living on upper campus in Horton Hall, Blackstone Hall, Alpha Hall, or Sigma Hall. No matter what dorm you end up in, I can almost guarantee that you will have some of the most fun you have ever had in your life.

To ensure that you won’t have to learn things “the hard way,” I’m going to give you some tips on living in the dorms!

1. Keep your door open.

Whenever you are in your room, try your best to keep the door open (unless you are extremely introverted, then keep it closed)! Keeping your door open will help you meet a lot of people on the floor and help you engage in conversations that may have never come about. Also, keeping your door open will help build the community on your floor. If your neighbors see you leaving your door open, then they will start to do the same.

2. Be mindful.

Be mindful of other people on your floor. No one likes being kept up late and no one likes using a super dirty bathroom. All I’m saying is make sure you clean up after yourself and don’t be too loud either really early in the morning or really late at night. Not everyone has the same sleeping schedule as you do. Trust me, you'll appreciate it when your floor mates do the same!

3. Participate.

Make sure you participate in the events that are happening with your floor. Basically, every floor in every dorm has some kind of tradition. Don’t be the person that thinks they’re too cool! Floor events like floor dinner, floor retreat and random hangout nights are some of the best times you’ll ever have, so make sure you’re involved with them!

4. Sacrifice sleep every once in awhile.

After a while, you will begin to understand that sleep during college, is not one of your top priorities. You need to make sure that you’re able to experience as much as you can while you’re in college. If sleep is the only thing keeping you from doing cool things with your friends, then forget about getting your eight hours for that night, hang with your friends and make memories!

5. BE yourself.

This might be one of the most important tips I can give you. Make sure to be yourself and don’t try to be someone else just to fit in. People will like you a lot more when you’re being yourself rather than trying to be someone you’re not. Also, by being yourself, you’ll most likely find friends that are into the same exact things that you are!

Until next time,
