Wooooo! Hello Internet friends!! I hope you are doing well. I must say that this week has blown by. This is definitely the busiest time of the semester, and it is easy to become overwhelmed. But, I have been extremely fortunate to have opportunities to go out and explore the area around Biola. You can catch a glimpse of those adventures in previous blogs posted here!
So, this weekend I went to this little event call the Biola Media Conference. The conference is basically for Christians who are interested in working in the film industry. It addresses topics like how to effectively live out your faith while making a living in Hollywood. Breakout sessions included talks from writers on the shows Jane the Virgin, Being Mary Jane, and Sons of Anarchy. They discussed very practical topics such as, how to get a job as a writer’s assistants and how to move up as a writer. As someone who has basically no experience in Hollywood, I felt like I left that break out session with so much more knowledge.
One of the main stage speakers was Rob Liefeld. Liefeld was hired by Marvel straight out of high school as a comic book artist. He is famously known for creating everyone’s favorite anti-hero, Deadpool. He encouraged us to not be discouraged when looking for work. He shared with us his testimony and journey within the industry. We all received a copy of his latest Deadpool comic, and I was even able to get it signed by him.
The whole event was such an encouragement. Lately, I had been questioning whether I was really going to make it as a writer in Hollywood. I was beginning to doubt that this was the right path for me. But the Biola Media Conference really just reignited the excitement and passion I had for screenwriting at the beginning of the year. I am honestly so grateful to be a part of a community of people who are so passionate about the art of storytelling. This conference has made me excited for what my future in film holds.
Also shoutout to my friend, Jeli, who got me into the conference for free as her plus one. You rock.
Like always, message me with any questions you have!
