Visiting Campus
Five weeks have passed since your student moved to college. For many of
us, the final moments before saying goodbye to our student were filled
with last-minute details and errands. Moving-in weekend, and all the
preparations leading up to it, was hardly relaxing. That is why we
invite you back to campus!
Next Friday and Saturday, Biola will be hosting Parent Weekend. This
annual event, held the first weekend of October, offers families the
opportunity to come to campus to see and experience college life with
their student. We offer plenty of opportunities for guests to mingle
with faculty, administrators, and other students, as well as
participate in college activities, such as attending chapel, visiting
classes and enjoying a concert by Biola’s Conservatory of
Music. More importantly, though, Parent Weekend provides a great
opportunity for families to reconnect. It is our desire that you be
able to spend time with your student and learn about their life here on
campus. We hope you’ll be able to join us!
For those coming, there are two things I would like to suggest to help
the whole family enjoy their time here. First, ask your student what
they would like to do. While you might want to spend the whole weekend
exploring campus and participating in the planned events, your student
might want to explore the surrounding community. Some students have
spent very little time off campus and would love to just go to a mall
or out to their favorite restaurant. So talk with your student and make
plans together. Second, please be mindful that your student still has
assignments and tests that need their attention sometime during the
weekend. And even though you want to spend every moment you can with
your student, they might need some space. With that said, give your
student the freedom to set limits on their availability.
Not all families will have the ability to attend Parent Weekend this
year. If that’s the case for you, plan to give extra
attention to your student from a distance. Some students may look at
families hanging out together and feel homesick or lonely. A phone
call, a letter in the mail, or a care package might be just what they
need to battle their blues. And keep in mind that you can visit campus
anytime, as long as your student is agreeable with the idea. Perhaps
planning a future visit would give your student something else to look
forward to. In any case, letting your student know that they are on
your mind could be just what they need next weekend.
On the journey with you,
Colleen Heykoop

The Bible is different than the
“sacred” books of other religions in that the Bible
corresponds tightly to the hard facts of history. Skeptics and
unbelievers who want to dismiss the Bible as myth and fairytale have
been proved wrong time and again by the stones that cry out through the
science of archeology.
Our guide will be Dr. John Bloom who holds two Ph.D.s and is known for
his visually striking presentations of the digs, the artifacts, and the
documents that show the Bible to be a reliable record of
God’s work in history.

Punk ‘N’ Pie-

No American Idol can ever live up to the supernatural talents possessed
by Biola students. Whether it's playing a mean double spoon over your
thigh, singing the national anthem while drinking a glass of milk, or
telling jokes that even your grandpa wouldn’t laugh at,
students do not want to miss the opportunity to sign up for this fun
experience. Feast on Grandma’s homemade
punk’n’pie, and wash it down with smooth refreshing
apple cider and rich creamy hot chocolate. Special prizes are
awarded to the talent show winners.
