Greeting

My daughter was telling me about her Bible class recently. She is taking Old Testament Survey from Dr. Talley. The workload is demanding, but she seems to be enjoying it. Despite having grown up in the church and having attended a Christian high school, she has admitted that there’s still a lot she doesn’t know about those Bible stories she’s heard over and over. In fact, this class seems to prompt a lot of questions – so much so that the professor has told the students that he will take their questions only after they have first researched the question for themselves. I was a little puzzled by this at first, but the more I think about it, the more I see the wisdom in Dr. Talley’s rule.

Asking a question and being told the answer is one of the most primary forms of learning. There’s no effort required of the student, just the taking of what is given. It’s the equivalent of being spoon-fed at the dinner table. There was a time for that in all of our lives. However, at some point, our parents decided it was time for us to start feeding ourselves. It was hard work, but it was work that was required of us to learn and to grow. It is unfortunate, then, that as our children grow, we parents become more and more tempted to jump in to give our students “the answers” to their questions and challenges, robbing them of opportunities to grow and mature.

I made this mistake last week. My daughter needed to adjust her class schedule, but the result would have her in class from 10:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. two days a week. She was very concerned that she would not be able to eat lunch on those days and was considering just dropping a class because of the conflict. However, as she was sharing this with me, I had a vague recollection that the Café offered a “sack lunch” option for just these situations. I told her of this and recommended she look into this possibility. I wish I had stopped there, but not five minutes later I was on the Biola website, doing a search on sack lunches. I was so excited to be able to share with my daughter, that yes indeed the Café will pack a lunch for those who’ve made arrangements through the Café Office. My daughter appreciated my help, and I was so glad to be able to offer the solution she needed. But in hindsight, I realize I blew it. I took away a growth opportunity.

College is about growing and maturing. It’s about learning to consider options and making the best decisions with the information found. It’s about putting forth the effort to discover the options. As parents, I think we forget that the effort is part of the learning process. For me, it is so much easier to give my daughter the answer instead of stepping back and allowing her to take the initiative to research and solve her issues. Granted, I have loving motives, but in the long run, attempting to provide all the answers only hinders the maturity and sense of success my daughter would experience when she discovers the solution herself.

So I’m challenging myself to help my daughter find the answers herself by not giving them all to her. It won’t be easy. It goes against my natural instinct to want to help and protect her. But her hard work done now will pay off later.

On the journey with you,

Centennial celebrations are well underway on campus and around LA!

Biola celebrated their 100th anniversary in style with the first runway show on Biola's campus debuting the Red Line anniversary apparel designed by Adam Sjoberg, (’07).

The Red Line Runway Show, sponsored by Centennial Celebrations and Associated Students, marked the first centennial event held on campus.

The fashion show featured live music by Delta Spirit and Sparrow Love Crew with over 1,200 students, VIPs, and other guests. The gym was transformed into an unrecognizable red sea with oversized balloons, lights, and red drapes everywhere.  With spectacular lighting effects and energy abounding, the air was full of anticipation as the music faded and the models took the runway.

Nineteen models graced the runway with Red Line styles that included both casual and formal wear.  Including over 42 styles.  Last to hit the stage were Anders and Ella Corey followed by their parents President and Mrs. Corey.

Thousands of dollars were raised for the American Heart Association’s Go Red Campaign from proceeds from tickets and the auction of several formal gowns.

This past weekend nearly 2,000 Biolans attended Dodger Day for an all-you-can-eat feast. President Corey threw out the first pitch and Biolans enjoyed the game and the sunny day.

If you missed the Red Line and Dodger Day, there are plenty of other ways to join in on anniversary fun.

Heart walkAnother exciting addition to the Centennial calendar is the American Heart Association Heart Walk on September 29th at Exposition Park.  Biolans will be walking to raise money and awareness for Heart disease and stroke.  This is an exciting partnership and we are thrilled to continue working with the American Heart Association.  For more information on the Heart Walk visit www.heartwalkla.org.

BiolafestBe sure to save the date for November 3 and plan a trip down to Biola for Biolafest: A Homecoming Revival.  This day full of music and fun will take place at Biola and reunite the generations.  With a $5 lunch on the lawn and music from a variety of different performers, the day is great for the whole family.  This free event will feature games, a classic car show, and music from the Biola Gospel Choir, Jimmy Fisher, and close with a concert by Mercy Me. Please bring a pair of new shoes to donate for our “Steps from Hope” shoe drive to benefit the Union Rescue Mission.  No reservations are needed for this event.

The Bible is different than the “sacred” books of other religions in that the Bible corresponds tightly to the hard facts of history. Skeptics and unbelievers who want to dismiss the Bible as myth and fairytale have been proven wrong time and again by the stones that cry out through the science of archeology.

Our guide will be Dr. John Bloom who holds two Ph.D.s and is known for his visually striking presentations of the digs, the artifacts, and the documents that show the Bible to be a reliable record of God’s work in history.

Biola Lingo

Ever wonder what in the world an "Eagle's Nest" is?  We are here to help.

Eagle's Nest: The on campus restaurant where students can use their flex dollars.  Often referred to as simply "Eagles" and serves a full menu of breakfast, lunch and dinner items.

Common Grounds: The on campus coffee shop commonly referred to as "Commons".  It can be found directly next door to "Eagles" and accepts flex dollars as well as all other forms of payment.

The Talon: Biola's newest on campus dining option, featuring a lighter more to-go style fair.  It can be found in the new Crowell School of Business.
