Expectation "It is hard to depart, but if the good-bye is not painful the hello cannot be joyful either." -Henri Nouwen This week most of you said good-bye to your students for another semester. Whether your student's departure came with a sigh of relief, or a few tears, or maybe both, the reality is you will miss them, and they will miss you. Here on campus the dorms have reopend, the cafeteria is again buzzing, and classes start on Monday. The holiday break is definitely over, and the air if full of expectation. On the University campus spring is a unique time. Freshmen are beginning to find their own niches and every day brings a greater confidence in their ability to "make it" in this new world. Sophomores tend to have solidified their group of friends by this time and will be the most apt to describe this as one of the most fun times of their lives. Juniors on the other hand will begin to feel the pressure of the real world this semester, as the questions about graduate school or career plans become more frequent and harder to ignore. And for most Seniors this will be a bitter sweet semester as they begin the process of saying good-bye. What does all of this mean for you as a parent? It means you have an opportunity. An opportunity to join with your student in this time of expectation. Whether that be expectation of all the good exciting things to come, or even the hard and sad things to come, there will be lots of opportunities this season. Opportunities for you to listen and for you to care. One of the great spiritual writers of our time, Henri Nouwen, says this, "When we honestly ask ourselves which persons in our lives mean the most to us, we often find that it is those who, instead of giving much advice, solutions, or cures, have chosen rather to share our pain and our joys." Obviously not every student fits the descriptions above, but regardless of whether it means celebrating with your student that they are "making it", or being a little more understanding of a newly blossomed social life, or asking intentional questions about how it is for your student to think about leaving this place they have called home, don't miss these opportunities to share in your student's life. Keep looking up, Mallory Rae Service Coordinator Parent Relations |
