Greeting

Oops, I did it again

I thought I learned this lesson two months ago. You may remember that in September I wrote about my temptation to do a task for my freshman daughter that she needed to learn to do herself. Well, this time I thought I would be a helpful and loving mother by assisting my daughter in choosing her classes for spring semester. Her days are currently packed with projects, exams, dorm outings and work. She has too much going on to sit down and figure out her schedule on her own, or so I thought.

Then I caught myself. What am I doing? I should know better! I am taking away from my daughter a valuable learning opportunity. This was confirmed by an article that came across my desk soon after. Lynette Merriman, the senior associate dean for student affairs at University of Southern California, wrote an article for The Chronicle of High Education titled, “It’s Your Child’s Education, Not Yours.” What she wrote hit me right between the eyes!

“College has traditionally been a transition to adulthood, with campus life and academic experiences providing students with knowledge, tools, and challenges that create a sturdy foundation on which students build their personal and professional lives. But that foundation is eroding because parents are now wielding the tools - such as problem solving, resourcefulness, critical thinking, and exploration - and responding to those challenges. Parents are diminishing the learning opportunities that higher education purposefully presents to students” (The Chronicle of Higher Education, November 23, 2007).

These words are difficult to hear, but as an administrator in higher education and as a mother, I realize they are true. Lucas Lamadrid, dean of students at Saint Vincent College in Pennsylvania, calls it “overfacilitation” (About Campus, March-April 2002, p25-27).  Overfacilitation, or literally “over helping,” stems from the best of intentions. As in my case, it flows from a natural instinct to love and care for my child. However, over-helping does not aid in maturation and growth. In fact, it often stunts and cripples.

It reminds me of the story of a child who came across a chrysalis from which a butterfly was struggling to break free. In an effort to help the butterfly, the child ripped open the chrysalis, only for the butterfly to fall to the ground and die. Little did the child know, that it is in the struggle to break free of the chrysalis that the butterfly becomes strong enough to fly and to thrive. What a perfect analogy for the disservice we can do to our children when we parents step in to make their lives easier.

Please know that Biola does not want the parents of our students to dust off their hands and walk away once they’ve sent their students off to college.  Children will always need their parents, no matter what their age. We do believe, however, that the role a parent plays needs to change once their child reaches college age. I like the suggestion Mr. Lamadrid offers in his article. He suggests that parents think of themselves, not as assistants, but as consultants.

Consultants offer the resources at their disposal, help the client to analyze the problem, and offer some strategies and solutions. A consultant facilitates.  A consultant does not execute the recommendations made” (About Campus, p.27).

In other words, it is appropriate for me to discuss academic goals and schedules with my daughter, but it is not appropriate for me as a parent to schedule classes for her. And it is appropriate to suggest to my daughter that she meet with an academic advisor to discuss scheduling options, but it is not appropriate for me to call the advisor myself to discuss my daughter’s options. As difficult as that may be (especially since the advising office is just down the hall from my office!), I know that my daughter will gain the most from her college education if I allow her to handle the daily issues as well as the challenges that come with being a college student.

The staff and faculty at Biola are here to serve your students, so encourage them to call us when they have questions or want an appointment to meet in person. We feel blessed to be involved in your students’ growth and development, so we thank you for this opportunity.

Blessings to you and your family,

Colleen Heykoop
Manager, Parent Relations
