Greeting
|
It has finally come…the first
major holiday break in the academic calendar. Within days many of our
college students will be home for the first time in twelve weeks.
Chances are they will have changed a bit. Their hair might be longer,
shorter or a new color altogether. They may have an additional piercing
or two (mine does.) They might have picked up some new mannerisms or
lingo, (maybe even a foreign accent, like I remember from a student in
my youth group days!) And they will hopefully be filled with stories of
new experiences, professors, and concepts they’ve learned.
What an exciting time it will be for those of you whose kids will be
coming home!
Be careful, though. Excitement
can easily turn to disappointment, if it is fueled by expectations. As
parents, you may be envisioning that your student is going to hang out
with you, help you cook Thanksgiving dinner or go visit relatives with
you. If this is the first time you have had access to your student for
any length of time, you could be hoping that you’re going to
hear lots of stories about what has been going on in their lives.
Chances are, however, that is not going to happen.
Put yourself in your
student’s shoes. They’ve been working hard to get
all their assignments and projects done before leaving campus, so they
might be sleep deprived and looking forward to sleeping in. This also
might be their first opportunity to reconnect with old high school
classmates and youth group friends, so when they are awake,
they’re meeting up with their buddies at their old favorite
hangouts. And to top it off, since your student is probably used to
staying up until at least 2 a.m., they will probably keep the same
habit, causing you to worry about where they are and wondering when
they will come home. The anticipation and excitement that you had
concerning your student being home may very well be replaced by
frustration, hurt, and even anger.
To avoid such an experience,
may I suggest that you attempt to eliminate expectations? Unfulfilled
expectations make for unhappy, and sometimes bitter, relationships.
Instead, talk to your student about your desires, and just as
important, listen to theirs. With a little planning and communication
ahead of time, you may be able to avert misunderstandings and hurt
feelings. If it is important to you to have your student be involved in
making pies for Thanksgiving, let them know and plan it into both your
schedules. If you can’t get to sleep at night, not knowing
when your student will come home, come to an agreement before hand
regarding communicating their whereabouts and setting a curfew.
Beginning the holiday with communication and compromise will go a long
way toward creating the enjoyable and loving environment that you
desire.
It is the season of
thanksgiving and we at Biola are so thankful, and humbled, that you
have entrusted your sons and daughters to us. May you and your family
experience God’s love and mercy this holiday season and
beyond.
