Home Sure Seems Different It has been a delight to have my daughter living back at home during Christmas break and interterm. Her presence makes home seem more “normal” again. She’s eating dinner with us again, washing dishes with her brother, and on occasion, watching movies with us on the couch. She’s also leaving make-up on the bathroom counter, mail on the table and shoes in the entryway. Yep, she’s home, and I like it a lot! But the reality is, family life isn’t “normal,” if there even is such a thing. While our daughter was at college, she developed new interests, had new experiences, and gained some new knowledge. As a family, we moved on with life, too. We bought a new car, took on new job responsibilities and enjoyed the additional space available in the house. As much as we all love having our college student home (including her brother), it definitely isn’t the same. In their book, “Letting Go- A Parents’ Guide to Understanding the College Years,” Karen Coburn and Madge Treeger write that “The pleasures and pains of parenthood are highlighted during the periods throughout the college years when children reenter the household” (p. 322). I don’t know about you, but we have certainly experienced both the pleasure and the pain during the past four weeks. When our daughter engages us in conversation over what she learned in Cultural Anthropology, or on the topic of her favorite chapel speaker, we are so encouraged by her growth and development. She’s introducing topics that are new to us, or that we haven’t discussed for a while. She’s also teaching us a new way of viewing films, pointing out the types of camera angles and lighting techniques that she learned about in her Visual Aesthetics class. Our interactions and conversations have definitely taken on a new and fun dimension. On the other hand, the return home by our college student has reminded us of some of the challenges of being a parent. She has had disappointment with high school friends and days of introspection that renew my anxiety and desire to rush in and “fix” her problems with lots of suggestions. There is also the hope that a certain bothersome trait would have lessened or gone away, but it hasn’t. (Of course, she’s probably hoping the same thing about us!) The fact is, I got used to not being privy to all the ups and downs in her life, and now they are part of my day again. I thought I would like this aspect of her being home, but it’s not so easy. I don’t have an answer for how to deal with this new dynamic in our family life. Every family whose child moves away goes through it, but of course, every family is as different as the individuals in it. What I do know is that I have been privileged to have this child in my life, talents and weaknesses included. But she’s not mine to keep. She’s mine to hold loosely. So as she comes and goes, I love her, I accept her, I listen to her, I encourage her. I think that’s all we’re asked to do. On the journey with you, Colleen Heykoop |
