This year Biola is implementing a mass notification system that will facilitate communication and response in the case of an emergency on campus. One of the people who has been integral in setting up this system for Biola, is Deputy Chief of Campus Safety John Ojeisekhoba. Below is a message from the Deputy Chief explaining the system in more detail. As a special note, on November 9, 2007 a test message was sent out from the system asking for a response to confirm that the message was received. Once again, this was only a test. Please encourage your students to provide their full and accurate information (cell phone and email address) each semester as they register for classes, so that the system can function as effectively as possible. Blessings, Mallory

3N Mass Communication System |

Biola's 3N Mass Notification System
To the Biola Community: Over the summer, Campus Safety completed several projects that will further strengthen the University’s ability to effectively manage emergencies on campus. One such project is the 3n Mass Notification System. 3n is a comprehensive emergency communication system that enables colleges and universities to effectively communicate within minutes to students, faculty, and staff through their cell phones, blackberry devices, email, and instant messaging. The ability to send messages via several means increases the likelihood that messages will be delivered and understood by those located on-campus and off-campus at any hour of the day or night. It will alert the community to the emergency situation as well as ask each person to respond with the nature of their individual situation. The 3n system, also recently implemented by Virginia Tech, will assist Campus Safety in assembling and coordinating campus security and crisis response teams, convening immediate briefings with campus security and university officials, notifying students, faculty and staff in minutes, and reaching each student on popular devices with voice and text simultaneously. The system requires all participants to provide a cell phone number during the initial registration. At the beginning of each semester or session, the system will be updated with current names and cell phone numbers. Currently, approximately 6,200 students, faculty, and staff have signed up since its inception. A test of the 3n system will take place on Friday, November 9.

All others pay $10 per ticket. You may purchase tickets by emailing theatre.tickets@biola.edu. Due to the Elizabethean English, the play is probably appropriate for children 12 and over. Featuring one of the largest casts ever in a Biola show (27), DREAM features students, alumni, and even a parent of a Biola student in the cast. Student Survival SacksWe here in the Parent Relations Department wanted to make you aware of an opportunity to encourage your student and support the Spiritual Life Department (formerly known as Student Ministries) here on campus. The purpose of the Spiritual Life Department is to give students tangible experiences in discipleship and evangelism. Through Spiritual Life you will have the opportunity to purchase a "Survival Sack" for your student which will be delivered the Friday before finals week. This service is separate from our year round Hugs from Home services, and we encourage you to take advantage of this opportunity. Dear Biola Parent: Can you imagine the pressure and stress a typical student faces during finals week? Many students are in survival mode. Imagine them receiving a gift from home during this exhaustive time, to help them through their week. With your generous, tax-deductible gift to Spiritual Life*, we have the opportunity to deliver “Survival Sacks” to your son/daughter’s residence hall room the weekend before final exams begin. This Survival Sack will contain a plentiful assortment of fresh fruit, popcorn, sugarless gum, granola bars and various snacks and candy. Your personal note of encouragement will be attached. This service to parents and students is the primary way we raise support for our ministry efforts. It helps us in developing your students as ministers through our discipleship, evangelism, and outreach ministries. It also helps support our mission teams, both locally and abroad. Our focus is to develop students as disciples of Christ and healthy ministers of the gospel. You can encourage and bless your son or daughter during this intensive time of finals week and have a part in fulfilling this important vision through participating in our Survival Sack project. The packages and encouragement notes will be delivered on Friday, December 7th. We would love to hear from you before Wednesday, December 5th. A self-addressed envelope is enclosed for your convenience. Thanks again for sending us your student. It is a great privilege to have a part in cultivating disciples of Christ to grow in truth, transformation, and testimony!
