Greeting

Now that Midterms are Over…

For a few days after the last midterm exam, there was a noticeable bounce in the steps of the students. In fact, last week Friday I think I heard an audible sigh in multi-part harmony!  Life was more relaxing, at least for a few days.

The coming of November changes all of that. It marks the beginning of the end-of-the-semester projects; it means that Thanksgiving Break is coming, but not for another three weeks; it means that there are fewer and fewer weeks to make-up missed chapels; and it means that it’s time to start planning for spring semester classes which is especially stressful if a student discovers he doesn’t like the major he is in.

November brings a lot of challenges, and your student needs your encouragement during stressful times, to know that you believe in them and are proud of them. And honestly, it doesn’t take much to brighten your son or daughter’s day. Recently I sent my daughter the Movie Hug from Home. It includes a gift card for a movie rental from the nearby Blockbuster, a package of microwave popcorn, root beer and some candy. With it I included a note that let her know I was thinking of her and praying for her. When my daughter called to say thanks, one would have thought that I gave her a car. She was so excited!

I encourage you to take a moment right now and do something that you know will speak love to your student. Send your student an email, mail them a letter, or order them a “Hugs from Home” package. It really doesn’t matter what it is, as long as your student senses that you love them and are very proud of them. Believe me, it’s well worth the effort!

Yours on the journey,

Colleen Heykoop
Manager, Parent Relations
