Greeting

Southern California Fire Update

Whether you live 1,000 miles away and have only seen the images on television of this week's fires, or if you call Southern California home and have been personally affected, we recognize that for many of you this has been a very anxious, if not weary, week.  We wanted to take this chance to affirm that the Biola University campus continues to be a considerable distance away from the fires, and business and classes have gone on as normal throughout this week.  While all of Southern California is experiencing the effects of smoke and ash, we once again affirm that the Biola University Campus is not in danger.  Should this situation change in the future, Biola is prepared with a Disaster Preparedness and Emergency Operations Plan, which can be viewed on the campus safety website.  Please continue to pray for the families and communities who have been affected by the devastation of these fires.

Blessings,
Mallory Rae

Academic Advising

Academic Advising

The time to choose classes for next semester is quickly approaching. The first phase of WebReg (Biola’s online registration tool) for Interterm and Spring 2008 begins on Thursday, November 15 for undergraduate seniors. Juniors may register on November 19, sophomores on November 26, and freshmen on November 28. At this time, students will sign up online for classes that meet General Education, Biblical Studies, and major requirements. Students are assigned class schedules by Academic Advising only during their very first semester at Biola. From this point on, they are responsible for selecting and registering for their own classes via WebReg. (For more information about WebReg, visit mywebreg.biola.edu.)
Don’t worry, though — your student won’t be left to fend for himself. Academic advisors are available for appointments and eager to assist students in designing class schedules. We strongly recommend that students meet with an advisor at least once a semester, and definitely before choosing classes for the next term. Monday, October 29 officially marks the start of academic advising geared specifically toward course selection. Beginning on this day, you can visit biola.edu/registrar to view the course schedule. After surveying available classes, each student can meet with her academic advisor to discuss the classes that would best suit her major, graduation timeline, and other academic goals.
Biola operates on a faculty-based advising model, which means that students’ advisors are professors within their major. Departments have different methods of assigning advisors, so if your student does not know who his advisor is, he should call or visit his department secretary. Students are also welcome to contact Academic Advising at (562) 903-4782 or academic.advising@biola.edu to get this information.
The Academic Advising Office advises all undeclared students, so if your student has not yet chosen a major, please encourage her to schedule an appointment with us. We love discussing options for majors and class schedules, and are always happy to help students achieve their academic goals in any way we can.

Academic Advisor
