Torrey
Conference
I first came
to Biola as a freshman in 2002, and for at least the first two years of
my college experience I would call my parents almost weekly just in
tears. It was never that things were horrible or that I did
not want to be where I was, it was just that things were changing. In
fact I remember most of my days being full of laughter, fun, and
excitement. However, it was those moments at the end of the
day when I would pick up the phone and hear that all familiar and all
comforting voice of my mother at the other end, that the magnitude of
what was happening in my life would slowly sink in. No matter
how strong I started in the conversation, I would often dissolve into
the slightly scared and seriously overwhelmed 18 year old that I really
was. God was working in my life, I was changing, I was
breaking, and I was growing. I look back and see how hard it must have
been for my parents, 1,500 miles away, to sit and listen to me cry, yet
the growth behind those tearful conversations was
immeasurable.
When I think about this growth that I experienced while at Biola there
are markers that represent for me what God was doing at certain points
in my life. Torrey conference is one of those markers. Every
year by the time Torrey came around it seemed that the glitz of the new
year had slightly faded, relationships were hard, friends were
changing, and midterms had left me exhausted. Yet it was
always in those times that I seemed to learn the most. As I
sat in the gym this week, six years removed from my first Torrey
Conference I was overwhelmed by the incredibly distinctive nature of
what I was taking part in. Your students are not at just
another University, they are in a place that values the teaching of the
Word of God, and the growth that results from that teaching, enough to
set aside three whole days to worship and learn as a corporate
community. Jill Briscoe, author and speaker, began one of
Thursday morning’s sessions speaking about David and quoting,
“the sacrifices of God are a broken and contrite
spirit”, from Psalm 51. She spoke saying that no
matter how straight your parents have aimed you there is still a point
in your life where you must come face to face with the fact that you
are a sinner. She continued to expound on the simple truth
that all sins are big sins, with pride perhaps the biggest of them
all. Yet what we must always come back to is the wonderful
news of the gospel, that all of our sins are covered. As she
finished speaking the crowd rose and spontaneously began to sing
“Nothing but the blood of Jesus”. And while I am
not yet a parent myself, I can only imagine that one of the greatest
joys in life must be knowing that your child is a worshipper of the one
true God, and let me tell you that gym was full of worship.
Biola is a place where you can expect and should expect that your
student is going to be asked to look at who they really are and who God
really is, and in that is the growth. However, growth
sometimes just feels like breaking and that is ok too. It
might mean some hard phone calls, it might mean no phone calls for a
while, you might feel helpless, but behind it all there is growth.
Keep Looking Up,
Mallory Rae

A Midsummer
Night's Dream
Biola's Communication Studies
Department announces ticket sales for our 25th anniversary production
of William Shakespeare's classic comedy, A Midsummer Night's Dream,
directed by Forrest Robinson, running in Biola Theatre 21 from Nov. 1
through 17th (Thursdays to Saturday nights @ 8 PM; new matinee time of
4 PM on Sundays). (No Thursday show on Nov. 15 and
no Sunday show on Nov. 18.) Melodie Narramore Yocum directed
the first Biola production of DREAM in 1982 and we dedicate this
version of the play to her memory.
The special ticket rate for
Biola staff, students, faculty, and alumni is $8 per ticket.
All others pay $10 per ticket. You may purchase tickets by emailing theatre.tickets@biola.edu.
Due to the Elizabethean English, the play is probably appropriate for
children 12 and over.
Featuring one of the largest
casts ever in a Biola show (27), DREAM features students, alumni, and
even a parent of a Biola student in the cast. Biola
Theatre 21 has only 95 seats so you will want to order your tickets
early to assure a seat for this classic theatre
experience. Biola Theatre 21 is located on the
McNally campus and anyone coming from off campus should park in the
adjacent Parking Lot C.
Buy your tickets now because
November 1 will be here before you know it. Strange
things happen in our dreams sometimes...

Dr. Maurice Sklar was born in
New Orleans, Louisiana, to a Russian-Jewish family with a rich musical
heritage. At an early age, he began playing the violin, winning
numerous awards, and began studying violin with Fredell Lack in
Houston, Texas. He attended Ivan Galamian’s Strings Camp, was
accepted at the Juilliard School of Music in New York City at the age
of fifteen, and subsequently won a scholarship to attend the Curtis
Institute of Music at the age of sixteen, where he studied with the
great violin teacher, Ivan Galamian.
In 1984 he was accepted as a
scholarship student with the renowned violin pedagogue, Dorothy DeLay,
who later invited Maurice to return to Juilliard and conclude his
professional studies. 1990 brought an appointment as
Artist-in-Residence and professor of violin at Oral Roberts University,
Tulsa , Oklahoma. During the same year he became Associate
Concertmaster of the Tulsa Philharmonic for the season. He received a
Doctorate of Ministry degree from Spirit of Truth Seminary, Huntsville,
Alabama, for his pioneering work in re-introducing classical music to
the church body as powerful praise and worship tool, and for his
revival ministry. In 1992 he began his current ministry involvement
with churches across America and around the world as a concert soloist
and minister of the Gospel.
Dr. Maurice Sklar has appeared
as soloist with many orchestras, including The Little Orchestra Society
of New York at Lincoln Center, The Houston Symphony, and The New

Biola Radio
Did you know Biola has it's own
radio station?
Biola has a history when it
comes to radio. Founded in 1922 by the Bible Institute of Los Angeles,
KJS was the first radio station devoted to religious programming in Los
Angeles, and the second in the nation. By the end of the decade,
Biola's weekly broadcasts had developed into a show called The Biola
Hour that featured music and biblical preaching. By 1946, 183 stations
carried it across the nation, and this base grew as the 40's and 50's
progressed. The Biola Hour continued its run through the 70's and 80's.
Today, driven by an intense desire to revive the quality of the station
and bring it back to the forefront of campus life, BIOLA RADIO has now
been rebuilt and lives on once again.
With a music format that also
includes:
Live-in-studio interviews
Remote broadcasts of Biola
Eagle sports
