Greeting

The Half Way Mark!

Mid-October signifies the arrival of two things at Biola: mid-term exams and Torrey Memorial Bible Conference. For the past two weeks, students have buckled down, crammed, and in some cases, pulled all-nighters to be prepared for several cumulative exams. For those students new to the college experience, this can be a bit overwhelming, especially as they are trying to balance their studies with extra-curricular activities and ministry responsibilities. On top of that, add possible anxieties about money, roommate issues, and impending spring class selection, and your student might feel as if they are being stretched beyond the breaking point.

That’s why I think it is wonderful that Biola’s annual Torrey Memorial Bible Conference follows on the tail of mid-terms. For three days, October 17 – 19, students get a break from their regular class schedule to have their spirits fed and renewed.  Students are able to attend special sessions with gifted speakers, Pastors Bryan Loritts and Francis Chan, and author/speaker, Jill Briscoe. Every session begins with worship through music and is intended to challenge and restore the spirits of those who attend. What a great way to finish a long run of exams!

If you live in the area, please consider joining us for any portion of the Bible Conference.  A schedule of sessions and details can be found at the Torrey Conference website.   If you’re unable to join us, ask your student about their experience.  I’m sure you’ll be blessed by what they will have learned!

Yours on the journey,

Colleen Heykoop
Manager, Parent Relations

40 Days of Prayer

40 Days of Prayer
Beginning at 12:01am on October 4, SMU's Prayer Department began facilitating 40 Days of continuous, 24-hour prayer. We are collaborating with Residence Life and the AS Senators to setup a prayer chain between the 10 student communities on campus- the 7 on-campus dorms, the Block apartments, Bluff apartments, and the Commuters. Each community will setup a 24-hour prayer room in their area and pray in rotation for four days over a span of forty days. Students and faculty will sign up for 30-minute time slots, so that someone is always praying. Our vision for these 40 Days is to draw the Biola community into deeper intimacy with God and greater participation in His global work through sustained prayer. Please pray with us during this time! For more information go to the Biola Student website.

The Chimes

Did you know Biola has it's own student published weekly newspaper?

The Chimes is Biola's newspaper. The editorial staff of 12 edits the variety of stories brought in by Chimes reporters and publishes a newspaper every Thursday, excluding holidays, finals, and during Torrey and Missions Conference week. The Chimes staff is dedicated to fair and accurate coverage of not only events, issues and people at Biola University, but the world at large. Many members of the staff have a passion for the field of journalism, but there are some who just enjoy breaking the news, educating people and working under a deadline. Ultimately, The Chimes staff's mission is "to glorify God in how we run the newsroom, what we decide to cover, how we cover it, and in the overall presentation of the paper."

As a parent if you would like to read for yourself what the Chimes has to say, you can visit the Chimes online by going to the Chimes website, or you can purchase a full year subscription or a semester subscription, which would be mailed to you every Friday, through the Parent Relations website.
