Our daughter Danae will graduate this month. Our other daughter, Erin graduated three years ago. It seems like yesterday that we were moving both girls into their dorm rooms for the first time. Like much of life, it seems to go too fast. The older you get, the more you begin to savor the memories and to be grateful for the moments of time together before they vanish. The biblical admonition in Psalm 90:12, to number our days, takes on new meaning. As we observe the graduation ceremony, we will be praising God for the blessing Biola has been in each of our girl’s lives. They entered, knowing only a few people and after completing four years, have many new friends. Danae also had the gift of having at least one year to share Biola together with her sister and three years with cousins. We are humbled and grateful for the grace and provision of God in our daughters lives and want to thank the professors, administrators, R.A.’s, etc. who encouraged and challenged our girls. Our prayer is that Biola will remain committed to the mission its founders had 100 years ago and never lose its focus on the Living Word as the foundation for all learning. Dana & Judy Sommers Hometown: Grand Rapids, Michigan ![]() Students: Erin ('05) majored in English. Danae ('08) is majoring in Art. Have questions for Dana and Judy? Contact them by clicking here. |

Biola's commitment to good environmental stewardship: -The Biola power plant produces 85% of its own electricity, fueled by natural gas. -Heat generated by the engines are captured and reused for space heating and domestic hot water throughout campus, thereby saving money and eliminating emissions. -Biola has recycled over 104 tons of materials to date this academic year, including paper, cardboard, glass, aluminum, plastic, grass trimmings and electronic waste. -Biola’s recycling company estimates that Biola conserves over 600 trees, 260,000 gallons of water and 13,000 gallons of oil each year. -For the past two months, Biola has experimented with using “green” cleaning products in dorm rooms, meeting the Green-Seal G-37 standard for low VOC’s – safer for aquatic life and the people using the products. The University plans to switch to using all green cleaning products throughout the entire campus within the next year. -The cafeteria restrooms have recently be equipped with touch-free paper towel and soap dispensers featuring foaming hand soap and Green-Seal recycled paper products, resulting in less soap and paper used on campus and less soap entering water treatment plants. |

Chapel Schedule ![]() 9:30 a.m. Chase Gymnasium Monday, April 28th - Wednesday, April 30th Biola's annual Gender series Led by AS Chapel Board Friday, May 2nd- Community Life Chapel Revised Undergraduate Student Chapel Policy
Effective Fall 2008 University chapels and conferences are intended to bring the Biola community together regularly for worship, spiritual nurture and education regarding relevant issues facing us in our lives. The overall program brings a unique distinction to the ethos of Biola as a Christian university. Due to the central and significant nature of that ethos, attendance at chapel is required of all traditional students. Chapel and conference sessions are viewed in the same light as required academic classes. Therefore, the following guidelines have been developed: For Full Time Students: + 30 chapel credits per semester are required. 8 conference credits per semester are required. * Physical attendance at 15 chapels and 4 conferences per semester is the minimum required. - 15 chapel and 4 conference make-up sessions per semester are the maximum allowed. For Part Time Students: + 20 chapel credits per semester are required. 5 conference credits per semester are required. * Physical attendance at 10 chapels and 3 conferences per semester is the minimum required. - 10 chapel and 2 conference make-up sessions per semester are the maximum allowed. Consequences for both full time and part time students: +A chapel hold is placed on student accounts at the end of the semester if their credit requirements (based on their enrollment status) have not been met. The deadline date for completed make-ups is approximately 2 weeks prior to the first day of Web Reg Phase II. Students will not be able to complete Web Reg Phase II until their make-ups are turned in. * Students who fail to attend the physical attendance requirement (based on their enrollment status) will be put on Chapel Probation the following semester. Students who fail to complete their physical attendance requirement while on Chapel Probation will not be able to take classes at Biola the following semester. |

Question of the Week |
|
|
In the Parent Relations Department, we realize that for you as parents there are many questions that arise throughout your student's college career. While some of those questions can be answered by our staff, or someone within the University, we recognize that sometimes hearing another parent's experience or advice can be much more valuable. In light of this, one of the desires of the Parent Relations Department is not only to connect you with the University, but also to connect you with each other as parents. Through this email for the next few weeks, we want to give you the opportunity to share your experiences with fellow parents. We will pose a question, as you will see below, and will invite you to respond based on your family's own experiences. Selected responses will then be included in the following week's email, for the benefit of other parents. By responding you are allowing Biola University to anonymously reprint and edit your response. Weekly Question #1 As students are beginning to register for next Fall's classes, many will be faced with the reality that they are not happy or successful in their current major. If you are a parent of a student who has changed majors once, or maybe even seven times, how have you sought to encourage and direct them in the decision making process? Have you found your advice to be well received or even needed? If you could go back with your student to Freshman year, would your advice regarding their major of choice look any different? Please respond by replying directly to this email or by sending your response to parent.relations@biola.edu. Also, please remember that by responding you are allowing Biola University to anonymously reprint and edit your response for the benefit of other parents in upcoming emails. [ return to top ] |
