Greeting

On Monday, April 7, the schedule of classes for the Fall 2008 semester will be published. This is in preparation for course selection (more commonly known as WebReg) that begins April 21 and runs through May 16. Students will have at least two weeks between the release of the schedule and WebReg to select course options for next fall. This is the perfect time for a student to meet with an advisor for guidance.

Biola’s advising system is faculty-based, meaning that if a student has declared a major, the student will have a faculty member from that major as an advisor. It is recommended that all students meet with an academic advisor prior to WebReg to discuss fall course selection and make sure their academic plan is on track. Students can make appointments by contacting the academic department office of their major. (Please note that students, not parents, should contact the academic department.)

For those students who have not yet declared a major, academic advising is provided through the Advising Center. Undeclared students are strongly encouraged to speak to an Academic Advisor before registering for classes. An appointment with an advisor can be made by calling or emailing the Advising Center or by filling out an appointment sheet at Smart Stop.

Students who are undecided about their major, or who may want to change their major, may feel a sense of urgency and stress when WebReg begins. As a parent, you may feel the stress and frustration, too, and be tempted to direct your student to select a major and/or courses of your choosing. Let me suggest that you resist that temptation, and instead, be a listener as you ask your student about their strengths and interests. Then encourage your student to meet with an Academic Advisor. They are here to assist your student in this very process.

Blessings to you and your family,

Colleen Heykoop
Manager, Parent Relations
