Greeting

Greetings from sunny, windy, chilly, misty, getting warmer southern California. Students' responses to our crazy weather are as varied as the states from which they come. I've overheard everything from "Can you believe it's this warm and it's only February!" to "I love the rain. It makes me think of home." Whatever ones weather preference, we got a little taste of everything this past week, so everyone should be happy!

One of the purposes of this weekly email from the Office of Parent Relations is to keep you informed as to what services the University provides. On a regular basis you can expect to read about these services from the staff on campus who provide them. This week the Deputy Chief of Campus Safety, John Ojeisekhoba, writes about the Emergency and Disaster Preparedness plans in place at Biola. We trust you will find it both informative and reassuring.

EMERGENCY/DISASTER PREPAREDNESS

The primary responsibility of the  Campus Safety Department at Biola University is to provide for the safety and protection of our students, staff and visitors on campus.  For this reason, the University has put in place a plan which serves as a guideline in the management of emergencies and disasters. The plan includes the establishment of an Emergency Operations (EO) Manager position. The EO Manager’s responsibilities include emergency preparedness and coordination of all aspects of the Emergency Operations Center during any University emergency situation.

In November 2007 and January 2008, the EO Manager coordinated two emergency/disaster drills. The first drill was planned in conjunction with the City of La Mirada’s annual city wide drill. During this event, the Biola University Emergency Response Team actively participated in a simulated earthquake scenario. The Emergency Command Vehicle and the campus Electronic Emergency Notification System (3N) were utilized. The second drill was planned by both Campus Safety and the University’s Residence Life department. The drill gave both departments numerous opportunities to work as a team and assess the University’s ability to respond to emergencies on campus.

Do you know students who would be a great match for Biola?  Let us know!

We need your help to find friends or relatives who you feel would be qualified applicants to Biola.  These may be high school freshmen, sophomores, juniors or seniors, as well as prospective transfer students.

Everyone who submits at least one qualified name will receive a certificate for a free drink at Common Grounds, our on-campus coffee house. And to the top four participants who submit the most names to our office, we will be giving out special prizes. These gifts will be based on the number of qualified names of students who are genuinely interested in Biola who are not already on our database. We can send these gifts directly to you or we can deliver them to your Biola student, whichever you prefer.  We will notify you at the end of February of any prizes you win.
