While
driving
through Los Angeles a couple of days ago, we spotted a large billboard
which read, “Biola University, 100 years, Impacting the World
for the
Lord Jesus Christ”. One hundred years ago, a small
Bible Institute
began on 6th and Hope Streets in downtown Los Angeles. At
that time
the face of Los Angeles was predominantly white. Today, 100
years
later, the urban landscape and the faces within are comprised of scores
of ethnic groups. Needless to say, things have
changed.
Colleen Heykoop’s article on diversity in last week’s newsletter got us thinking about the meaning and importance of the word “diversity”. It’s an issue that we, as African-Americans, have often thought about. Every person, no matter his race or cultural background, wants his unique heritage to be appreciated and respected. As members of the body of Christ, each one is a piece of a great puzzle forming a great picture which conveys God’s message of redemption to a broken world. So which is the greater goal – diversity or unity? Biola is actively seeking to increase the number of students from diverse ethnic backgrounds. The ad campaign which placed that billboard in the inner city is one example. Another example is the SURGE (Students of Under-Represented Groups of Ethnicity) Scholarship awarded to incoming students who are interesed in multi-ethnic mentorship. Both our children are recipients of the SURGE Scholarship. Let’s not forget, however, that achieving diversity is not the loftiest goal. If our greatest purpose is to “impact the world for Christ”, then we must demonstrate a unity which transcends our diversity. It is only through unity that we testify of God’s power to reconcile us to Himself and to each other. “They’ll know we are Christians by our love…” John and Alyce Campbell Parent Council February, 2008 ![]() |
