The Kingdom in our Midst I grew up on a farm in west Michigan in a little community that was settled by the Dutch Reformed and the German Mennonites (my family came from the Mennonite line, my husband the Reformed.) Life was simple and predictable in our town. I attended the same school for thirteen years, graduating from high school with basically the same kids from my kindergarten class. Few families moved away and few moved into town, that is, until the first crops were ready for harvest in May. At that time the Mata family, along with several other Mexican migrant families from Texas, would arrive to live and work for the local farmers until the snow started to fly in October. For half the year our community experienced racial diversity. Or did they? The migrant workers’ families didn’t go to our schools or our churches. They didn’t usually eat in the local restaurant (yes, we had just one) or skate at the roller rink. If I hadn’t been a farmer’s daughter, with the occasional opportunity to hang around the migrant houses in hopes of scoring a fresh, homemade tortilla from Señora Mata, I wonder if I would have ever had contact with the Mexican families that lived among us. Seventeen years ago my husband and I moved to southern California and entered a different world. My parents, only half-joking, told friends that we were missionaries in a foreign country. In a way, that’s how we felt at first, surrounded by people representing almost every continent on earth. But for us, it was very exciting! We were forced out of our comfort zone and we liked it. And if Heaven is going to have believers from every nation, tribe and tongue praising God together, then building community within diversity must be an important part of our life as believers here on earth. And that is why I am so thankful that ethnic diversity is important to Biola. Within Biola’s “Mission, Vision and Values” is a “Diversity Statement” including written theological support for our stance. I encourage you to read these documents when you have a chance. Our mission of diversity is enhanced and supported by our Department of Multi-Ethnic Programs and Multi-Cultural Relations Board, which sponsors clubs, programs, chapels and other events that offer diverse experiences as well as provide education. One such event is occurring on campus next weekend called SCORR. The 12th annual Student Congress on Racial Reconciliation (SCORR) is a “unique conference, which focuses on the needs of students from culturally diverse backgrounds on the Christian College campus,” states its director Glen Kinoshita. “This year’s theme, The Kingdom in our Midst, seeks to remind us that the Kingdom of God is a current day reality. Our challenge is to live in such a way that we seek first His Kingdom and its righteousness (Matthew 6:33).” The SCORR conference provides a wonderful opportunity for our students to grow in their love and compassion for people of all ethnicities. It will be held February 8-9 on Biola’s campus, with college students from a variety of Christian institutions participating, including George Fox, Fresno Pacific, Westmont and Taylor. A long list of exceptional speakers, musicians and artists will be offering special sessions and workshops. Visit the SCORR homepage to learn more about the conference and consider attending some or all of the sessions if you are able. I am so glad we serve a God who created each one of us as unique individuals. May we learn to build one another up as we live in community in the Kingdom of God. The purpose of the Family Life Series messages is to present, expound and promote a biblical view of family life and relationships. Healthy family relationships are very important to God, since sinful and dysfunctional relationships (especially among believers) can reflect poorly on His name and nature. Series messages can address dating relationships, marriage relationships, and parent-child relationships. The approach proceeds from a biblical foundational perspective, but may also deal with the correcting of dysfunctional perspectives and relationships from a biblical foundation. Origins Church Los Angeles/Long Beach is a part of The Origins Movement, a new church planting movement committed to multiplying missional communities through the influential urban centers of the world.
