As a parent, share about your experience with Biola.
During our daughter’s time at Biola we found the departmental staff eager to serve us with a warm and cheerful heart. We were kept informed about the events on campus throughout the year such as Parent Week and Torrey Conference. We also enjoyed attending various campus venues such as the classical concerts, plays, and operas.

In what way to do believe Biola has helped your daughter?
Biola’s strong commitment to Biblical scholarship and excellence is evident in the academic rigor of its courses, but most importantly we felt that Biola helped to further develop our daughter’s character. The training in Christian living at Biola continues far beyond the classroom into the dormitories, chapel messages, on-campus work opportunities, community service, and participation in the local church. Biola has enlarged her worldview and equipped her to serve the community. Vanessa is a volunteer at a therapeutic riding center where she helps autistic and special needs children develop motor skills while riding a horse. Vanessa has been blessed to acquire a position in her area of study. While at Biola her Anthropology professor facilitated a field internship at a local cultural resource management firm which led to a full time position. Vanessa currently works in environmental science as a field archaeologist and laboratory technician. In addition, she has developed an interest in vertebrate paleontology which has led to her recent fossil preparation work at the Natural History Museum of Los Angeles County.

Share your thoughts on Biola’s academic reputation and your daughter’s academic experience while at Biola.
Our initial exposure to Biola’s academic reputation began in High School, when we utilized the STAR Torrey Academy courses as a supplement to our home schooling. Vanessa was well prepared to engage in the academic rigors that a university demands. Her academic experience was spurred even further by her roommates who were key in helping Vanessa persevere in her academic excellence as they often encouraged her and lifted her up in prayer.
In addition, the academic excellence and spiritual mentorship offered by the professors was furthered in the group discussions of the Torrey Honors Institute and the informed lectures of the Anthropology department in the School of Intercultural Studies. We feel that Biola’s philosophy of education was not only aimed at informing a student’s mind, but in forming their hearts and mind so that they can be Godly leaders who think and reason well in their sphere of influence. Our daughter experienced a classical education, attained competence in her field of study, and has been equipped with the tools of learning. These tools of learning are what have helped her succeed in her work field. Almost two years after graduation, Vanessa continues to engage in the ideas of the day in her workplace and beyond.

Share your feelings about the value of a Biola education. Why do you feel Biola was a good financial investment for your student?
Several universities offer excellent academics, prestigious professors, and amiable research agendas aimed at providing the best training for your son or daughter. However, at Biola a student can finish with more than a Summa Cum Laude title or entrance into graduate school. Our daughter came away with wisdom, discernment, kindness, and a heart to serve. We feel privileged to have been able to financially sacrifice much for our daughter to attend Biola. One cannot put a dollar value on academic excellence aimed at cultivating spiritual maturity and leadership.
