6. Possessions and Conduct

Room Personalization


  • Rooms and apartments are furnished with one twin bed, one desk, one dresser, one bookcase and one desk chair for each planned resident. Rooms and apartments also contain built-in closet space or modular wardrobes for each planned resident. All furnishings are to remain in the rooms/apartments to which they are assigned.
  • Undergraduate housing is provided on a furnished basis. Furnishings are not to be removed from your residence hall room or apartment at any time, and “extra” furniture is not provided by the University. Furnishings include room furniture, drapes, blinds, mattresses, paint, carpet, floor tile, wastebaskets, telephones and window sticks/locks.
  • Furniture in suite-style rooms and apartment bedrooms must remain in the rooms to which it is originally assigned and residents must live in the rooms to which they are assigned. Residents of suites or apartments may not arrange their furnishings so that one room of the suite or one of the apartment bedrooms is a sleeping room and the other room is a living/study room.
  • Charges for replacing missing furnishings will be billed to the individual(s) to whom that equipment is assigned. There may also be a charge for returning furniture to rooms if it is removed.
  • Beds may be lofted or bunked only according to approved configurations. Diagrams are available from Auxiliary Services. Mattresses are to remain on bed frames and are not to be used on the floor. Beds set up in unapproved configurations may be reassembled by Auxiliary Services personnel.
  • Halogen floor lamps are prohibited due to risk of fire.
  • Due to the increase of bed bug infestations world-wide, the University prohibits the use of personal mattresses on campus. Students with medical conditions requiring a specific type of mattress must complete a mattress exception form, available from Auxiliary Services (Student Services Building).
  • Water beds and other water-filled furniture are prohibited.
  • Residents may rearrange the furniture in their rooms or apartments as long as the structure of the rooms and all permanent features remain unchanged and as long as beds are set up according to approved configurations. Furniture set up in unapproved configurations may be reassembled or rearranged by Auxiliary Services personnel.

Electrical Outlets/Fixtures

  • Do not remove or alter any electrical outlets or switches. Do not alter, remove or replace any lighting fixtures. Do not install any additional electrical fixtures, such as ceiling fans. Costs to return any altered fixture to its original condition will be billed to your student account.


  • No personal lofts, platforms or similar structures will be allowed in any University housing. Auxiliary Services will provide loftable beds for residents who wish to use them, as long as supply lasts. Contact the Residential Facilities Office, 562-944-0351, extension 5812.
  • University lofted beds come with a side rail to help prevent falling. Bunks and lofts in designated triple rooms will be set up with side rails included. Any students who request beds to be bunked or lofted should expect side rails to be installed unless they specifically ask not to have them. All resident students are required to sign a waiver of liability in case they choose to use a top bunk or lofted bed without side rails.
  • University bunks and lofted beds are designed to be used with the upper level mattress support surface at a maximum height of 59 inches. Bunk beds are designed to support two sleeping surfaces only. Students are not to set up University beds in configurations that do not comply with these design limitations. Furniture set up in unapproved configurations may be rearranged by Auxiliary Services personnel.

Decorating your room

  • No paint, wallpaper, contact paper or other adhesive products may be used on walls. No alternate flooring, such as tile, wood or wall-to-wall carpet, may be installed in rooms. Area rugs are allowed, but no adhesives may be used to attach them to the room carpet.
  • Only "Poster Putty" or small finishing nails may be used to apply decoration to walls and other surfaces. Residence Life staff members have a supply of nails available during semester check-in periods.
  • No nails of any type or size should be used in cinderblock walls. No tape or any kind of adhesives are to be used on walls, doors, windows, furniture or any other surfaces.
  • “Washable” crayons are not to be used on any surfaces.
  • No decorations may be hung within 1 foot of the ceiling. No decorations may be placed on any fire doors. No decorations may be placed within 3 feet of all four sides of a fire extinguisher or fire alarm pull station.
  • All decorations placed in rooms or apartments should be in harmony with the philosophy of the University as outlined in the Student Handbook. Distasteful, offensive or vulgar items are inappropriate and should not be displayed; you will be asked to remove them.


  • Because of a strict electrical code set by the State of California, none of the electrical switches, plugs, or fixtures in University housing may be altered. This means that no switches can be temporarily installed and no fixtures (including ceiling fans) may be altered or installed. This strict electrical code, combined with the potential for a fire as well as the limitations of the electrical system makes it imperative that certain parameters on the use of electrical appliances be observed. Hence, the following policies must be observed when using any electrical appliance or accessory. All food preparation must be done in a floor, hall or apartment kitchen and not in your room. Please note that the cleanliness of the floor or hall kitchens is the responsibility of those who use it.
  • Strict electrical codes, fire code and the limitations of Biola’s electrical system make parameters on the use of electrical appliances imperative. As a result, students who exceed the electrical load limitations in their rooms may be required to remove appliances. The following list or permitted and non-permitted items, while not exhaustive, is designed to help students stay within the electrical capacity of their rooms. Appliances permitted in student rooms

  • Small devices such as radios, clocks, phone chargers, laptops
  • Desktop or laptop computers
  • Electric blankets
  • Stereos – Less than or equal to 200 watts incoming power or 1.7 amps
  • Televisions – Less than or equal to 150 watts or 1.25 amps, which is generally 32â€� or smaller. Larger televisions are permitted in apartment living rooms.
  • Refrigerators – Maximum of two per room, limited to a maximum rating of 95 watts or .8 amps per refrigerator. If a student room contains only one refrigerator it must not exceed 190 watts or 1.6 amps. This information is usually found on the manufacturer’s label located on the back of the refrigerator. When in doubt, generally a refrigerator no larger than 1.8 cubic feet will meet the 95 watt limit.
  • Coffee makers or small pots for heating water (when used for their intended purpose)
  • Appliances such as a radio, clock, hair dryer (maximum 1300 watts), electric blanket, stereo (maximum 200 watts), or television (up to 150 watts) may be used in rooms or apartments.
  • Hair dryers are subject to the following limitations:
    Alpha, Hart Hall and Stewart Quads – hair dryers may only be used in community restrooms.
    Hope Hall, Horton Hall, Sigma (at vanity only) and Thompson Hall (at vanity only) – limited to 1,300 watt maximum in student rooms.
    Emerson Hall and Stewart Suites (at vanity only) – limited to 1,000 watt maximum in student rooms.
    NOTE: Higher wattage hair dryers may be used in community restrooms or apartment restrooms

Appliances NOT permitted in student rooms

  • Halogen floor lamps
  • Cooking/kitchen appliances such as hot plates, burners, microwave ovens, toaster ovens, electrical skillets, rice cookers, toasters, blenders, crock pots, popcorn poppers, sandwich makers or food grillers. These may be used in common area kitchens.
  • Air conditioners or space heaters
  • Irons must be used in the laundry rooms.

Vacuum Cleaners

  • Vacuum cleaners are available in each residence hall and in the Li and Welch apartment buildings and may be checked out through the Residence Life staff. Each Lido Mirada, Beachcomber, Tradewinds, Tropicana and La Mirada apartment has a vacuum cleaner provided.

Illegal Items

  • It is a violation to promote, distribute, sell, possess or use alcohol or narcotics or other controlled substances, including the unauthorized use of prescribed medications or use of any substance with the intent of becoming impaired or intoxicated. This applies either on or off campus, regardless of the student’s age.
  • Substances, paraphernalia (including, but not limited to pipes, hookahs, bongs, water pipes, herb grinders, rolling papers, blunt spliters, and lighters) and items so prohibited will be confiscated and appropriate disciplinary and/or legal action initiated.

Electrical Cords

  • Electrical cords may not extend through any doorway, ceiling panel or window, across any hallway or traffic area, or be placed under any carpet or rug.
  • Only “surge protected” extension cords are permitted in the residence halls and apartments. These cords may not be fastened to a wall or piece of furniture. Failure to comply with this policy may result in a $25 fine.
  • Extension cords are designed for temporary use only and should not be part of a permanent room arrangement
  • Extension cords should not be used for refrigerators and computers even temporarily. Power surge protector strips are recommended for computers.

Prohibited Items

  • Items described below are not permitted in the buildings, apartments or rooms, by residents or their guests, for legal, safety and/or health reasons.
  • Prohibited possessions may be confiscated and disposed of by the University in accordance with federal, state and local laws and established University procedure. Failure to comply may result in removal from University housing, student discipline and/or appropriate legal action.
  • Halogen floor lamps are not permitted in any University owned or managed housing, due to the high risk of fire. Halogen desk lamps are permitted.
  • Due to the increase of bed bug infestations world-wide, the University prohibits the use of personal mattresses on campus. Students with medical conditions requiring a specific type of mattress must complete a mattress exception form, available from Auxiliary Services (Student Services Building).
  • In order to prevent infestations, residents are required to closely inspect all personal furniture before bringing it to campus. Residents should report any suspected infestation immediately to Residential Facilities, 562-944-0351 ext. 5812.   • No personal lofts, platforms or similar structures will be allowed in any University housing. See “Lofts” in the Room Personalization section for information on University loftable beds
  • Water beds and other water-filled furniture are prohibited.
  • The use or storage of hazardous or toxic chemicals, substances or materials in Biola University housing is strictly prohibited. This includes, but is not limited to: charcoal briquettes, charcoal starter fluid, propane tanks and other barbecue materials, motor oil, gasoline, tires and other flammable automotive products, pesticides and photographic development chemicals. Aerosol cans (spray paint, spray lubricants such as WC40, hairspray, etc.) are considered hazardous waste if they are not empty to the point where no product or propellant comes out when the nozzle is depressed. Totally empty aerosol cans may be disposed of in regular trash, but cans with any remaining product or propellant should be treated as hazardous waste. Contact Facilities Management at 562-903-4898 if you have aerosol cans that need to be disposed of.
  • Cable and/or satellite television equipment and/or services are not to be installed or contracted for by student residents of Biola University residence halls or apartments.
  • Tobacco products and alcoholic beverages or their containers are strictly prohibited on University property.
  • Non-alcoholic beer, wine, or champagne or their containers may not be stored or consumed on campus.
  • Due to fire hazards and safety regulations, burning of candles and/or incense is not permitted.
  • Hammocks may not be used on campus.
  • Nerf weapons, water balloon launchers, slingshots, and similar projectile toys are not permitted in student housing.

Community Restrooms

  • Personal items should not be left in community restrooms (Alpha, Emerson, Hart Hall, Hope Hall, Horton Hall, Stewart Quads). Items left in the restrooms will be disposed of by Housekeeping.

Film Projects

  • No filming is allowed anywhere in Biola University residence halls and apartments.
  • No furnishings or other Biola University property from residence halls, apartments, common areas or storage rooms may be removed or borrowed for use in film projects.


  • “Raids” of any kind are prohibited because of the potential for injury, damage and/or disturbance.


  • Biola University supports and enforces Federal and California state law which prohibits hazing. For additional details and information please see the Biola University Student Handbook.


  • La Mirada has a city ordinance requiring quiet from 10:00 p.m. to 6:00 a.m. The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department will issue citations on campus to offenders of this ordinance. In order for us to be good neighbors, it is important that all members of the Biola community support this ordinance by keeping the campus quiet after 10:00 p.m.
  • After 10:00 p.m., the right to quiet supersedes anyone's right to make noise.
  • Residents responsible for excessive noise and/or disruptive behavior may be subject to disciplinary action. In addition, residents may be asked to remove sound systems or musical instruments from their rooms or apartments. In the interest of maintaining an environment appropriate to study, residents who continually disrupt their neighbors may be subject to removal from University housing as well as further disciplinary action.
  • Drums and other loud instruments are permitted for a maximum of two hours per week but only as approved on a case-by-case basis by the Residence Life staff.
  • During any evening if any noise can be heard outside of a room or apartment, it is too loud. It should be quiet enough that study and sleeping conditions are not disturbed.
  • Loud conversation in the hallways, on decks or in courtyards may be disturbing to others and should be avoided.
  • Students who are disturbed by noise have the responsibility to confront the offenders. Should the offense continue or be repeated, the student should speak with Residence Life staff.
  • At all times the Residence Life staff has the authority to take the steps they deem necessary to maintain a quiet atmosphere in the residence halls and apartments.
  • Only as directed by Residence Life staff will variations in noise levels during daytime hours be allowed.
  • Failure to abide by the noise standards may result in a minimum $25.00 fine.

Dissent & Disruption

  • In certain circumstances, when a student’s presence or conduct on campus may cause a disruption of the educational process or be considered a threat to individuals, to the community or to University property, the University reserves the right to remove a student from University housing temporarily or permanently, and to restrict a student’s access to campus.
  • Students have a right to ask questions, seek information and assistance or to express dissent, but this right must be exercised in a manner consistent with the Standards of Conduct. It must not be practiced in a way that violates the rights of others and the educational mission of the University.

Sports in the Buildings

  • Because of the great potential for injury, damage and disturbance, the playing of any and all sports in the residence halls and in or around the apartment buildings is prohibited. Failure to abide by this standard may result in a minimum $25 fine. Any damages resulting from such activities will be charged to those involved. Damage unreported by those responsible will be automatically charged to the occupants of the room, apartment, suite or floor involved.
  • Shaving cream, water and water balloon fights or other similar activities are not to take place in or around the residence halls or apartments. Any damages resulting from such activities will be charged to those involved. Unreported damages by those responsible will be automatically charged to the occupants of the room, apartment, suite or floor involved. Disciplinary action may also be a consequence.

Christmas Decoration

Christmas trees

  • Live tree are allowed in the residence hall rooms, apartments, lounges and lobbies, but state and county fire codes require that they be fireproofed.
  • Live trees must be purchased from a vendor who can treat and tag the tree and issue a fireproof certificate. Using a can of fire retardant spray will not meet the fire code. The vendor's tag must remain on the tree and the certificate must be presented to Facilities Management before the tree is taken into any building.
  • Artificial trees must be made of fire resistant material.
  • No "spray snow" is to be used on any surface as it is extremely difficult to remove. Instead, prepare a paste of laundry soap or soap powder and apply it to windows with a sponge.
  • Christmas light cords may not extend through any doorway, ceiling panel or window, across any hallway or other traffic area, or be placed under any carpet or rug. Indoor lights may be used indoors only. Outdoor lights may not be used indoors. No lights may be hung near water sources.


  • Due to health, cleanliness and damage concerns the only pets allowed are fish.
  • No fish aquarium may be larger than 20 gallons in capacity.
