Music Review Writing Contest

1. What: Participants will write a review of Dustin Kensrue’s newly released album, “Please Come Home.”
2. How: CD’s will be available for check out in the Mass Communications office through VJ Vonk from Monday, March 19 until Wednesday, March 28. A $10 deposit is required for check out, and will be returned in full if CD is returned on time. CD’s are due back to VJ Vonk by 9am the day following check out. 3. Deadline: Reviews are due to VJ Vonk by 12 noon on Thursday, March 29. No late entries will be accepted.
4. Judging: Judges will be speakers who are a part of the conference with expertise in music critique.
5. Suggestions for review writing (these elements will be a part of the judging consideration): written in third-person; cites at least one background source in newspaper style attribution; includes quotes from at least one authoritative, interviewed source; has a compelling lead, smooth transitions and an ending that brings good closure to the piece.
6. Winner: The winner will be announced at the Keynote Dinner on Friday, March 30, and will have their review published on Beliefnet.com.

2nd Annual “Capture” Photojournalism Contest

• Requirement:
  • Participants will submit one image that documents a musician/band in a live performance.
  • Image must be taken during the time frame of Monday, March 19 and Thursday, March 29 (12 noon). Any musical presentation will qualify (musicians performing for the music department, at a coffee shop, at a church, for a small group, etc.)
  • Contest entry MUST be submitted in electronic form, either through email or saved on a CD
  • Judging will be based on criteria for a strong image (composition & design, use of light, technical control, etc.) and on criteria for a strong photojournalistic image (speaks editorially, engages audience, human elements, etc.)
  • A caption will be required as part of the submission (please submit it either as a word document on your CD or on paper attached to your CD).
• Deadline: Submit image on a CD to VJ Vonk by 12 noon on Thursday, March 29.
• Winner: The winner will be announced at the Keynote Dinner on Friday, March 30.
